The chirps of enthusiastic morning birds flitted through the window, signalling the start of another day and you gave an exasperated sigh, rolling over to silence your alarm before it even had time to ring. Another sleepless night, you thought bitterly to yourself. Stretching your sore muscles, you moaned in pain.
It was the price to pay for your Quirk, which allowed you to stretch and bend your muscle fibers to contort your body into strange shapes, like a malleable piece of clay. Unfortunately, this meant you had to suffer from painful side effects. Chronic pain was your norm, and it came with sleepless nights like the one you just suffered from. And from the way your bones ached more than normal, you could tell there was a storm front coming in. No use fighting it, you thought, pouring your morning pills into your hand and swallowing them with a decisive sip of water. The medications were supposed to help soother some of the pain but you weren't even sure if they actually worked anymore, but it was better to take them instead of possibly dealing with even more pain.
Walking to school, you tried to dart underneath the trees to avoid the rain from soaking your body. The only problem was that the leaves had accumulated thicker puddles of water until the weight become too much to bear and dropped their even heavier loads onto your unprotected head. The coolness of the rain water sent shivers down your spine. "It'll be okay, once I get to school I know my day will be better!" You gripped your fists triumphantly in an attempt to encourage yourself.
Loud footsteps pounded into the pavement behind you and someone let out a loud laugh. "AH HA! That's the spirit, Y/N!" You turned around to see Inasa, dressed in a Shiketsu uniform that matched your own, flying down the street towards you. "Your energy this morning is INCREDIBLE!" He clapped a heavy hand on your back and snagged your arm, causing you to yelp out in pain as you stumbled behind your enthused classmate.
"How'd you sleep, Y/N? A good night's rest is the best way to start your morning!" Inasa grinned, still holding onto your arm. It ached even worse than when you had gotten out of bed.
"I-Inasa, please, I-"
"Come on, Y/N! You're up so early, it must be because you can't wait for our lessons today!" He gave a charming grin that spread across his entire face. You turned away to hide your burning cheeks. "Y/N, your passion for learning has me so pumped for today!"
Inasa came to a screeching halt and you inadvertently slammed into his broad back. "Oh, Inasa, I'm so sorry, please forgive me." His dark eyes turned to meet yours and the relaxed smile on his countenance melted away.
"Y/N? You don't look so- ah, I mean, you look a little tired." His brows knit together with worry underneath his cap. You stared at the cap a little too long wondering why it bothered you.
"Oh, I just didn't sleep well last night, is all, it's no big deal!" You tried to give a disarming smile. but he seemed unassured.
Inasa awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. "I see, I'm sorry to hear that. Is there anything I could do to help?"
You frowned, rubbing your wrist, which seemed to be the major area of concern as far as achy muscles. "No, it's okay, Inasa. I appreciate it, though." A decisive rain drop plopped right onto your head and you retrained your eyes from his to focus on his uniform cap. "Oh, no!" You groaned. "I left my cap at home!"
You felt a heavy weight fall on your head and looked up in confusion. Inasa's bare head revealed his well trimmed hair and a goofy grin.
"Inasa, no! I couldn't!"
He held up a finger to your lips to silence your complaints. "Come on, Y/N, it's not a big deal! If they make me run laps for leaving my hat, it'll make this even more worth it! Helping those in need is what being a hero's all about." Inasa clapped another hand on your shoulder sending you stumbling forward a little bit and moaning for your injured hip joints. You struggled to straighten yourself out but met resistance from your burning spine. "Y/N? Is everything all right?"
Inasa's giant form bent down to meet your eyes, which were half shut in pain and beginning to tear up. You plastered a horribly fake smile on your cheeks. "I'll be okay, just give me a minute, Inasa, please." The street sign indicated it was time to cross and you still couldn't convince your body to move until your feet lost their balance from underneath your sore hips.
It wasn't until your chin rested on one of Inasa's broad shoulders that you realized he had swept you off your feet, quite literally, and was now carrying you on his back. He had slipped your legs around either side of his waist and kept a firm grip on your thighs as he flew down the sidewalk towards the school building. "Inasa! Please! There's no need to do this, I-I told you I'd be fine!"
Your companion let out a breathy laugh. "Y/N, count this as part of my training!" The rhythmic pounding of his feet started luring you into a state of slumber.
"Inasa, I'm going to fall asleep, please put me down." You murmured into his shoulder, turning to make sure he could still hear you over the breeze that whipped up around his shoulders.
He let out a hearty laugh in return. "Then sleep, Y/N! I'll carry us both to class, you just rest, okay?"
"B-but what if someone sees us?" You tried to hide your face in the folds of his uniform.
"Then let them see! Let them know that I'll be your hero who never lets you down, Y/N." You could tell he was beaming as he spoke his words of reassurance.
You whispered a thanks before letting your heavy lids close for a few brief moments as the heat he emanated soothed your aching muscles. For the first time in a long time, you managed to get some uninterrupted sleep until you were gently placed into your seat and awoken with a bright smile from Inasa.
"We've arrived!" He grinned again.
You blinked your eyes a few times to reorient yourself. "Thanks, Inasa, I really appreciate it. You really are my hero." You snuck your arms underneath his to give him a hug, enjoying that he was still warm even after the time spent in the rain.
Inasa patted the cap that rested on your head and returned the hug with his other massive arm. "Always."
