I didn't call Callie back because I didn't want Callie to know. I didn't want anybody to know. I've only ever told my brother, nobody else. It's not that I'd have trouble breaking the news or anything; I knew exactly what I would say. I was embarrassed. My type of illness is not acceptable to society these days; it's just not. I wanted to tell her. But I didn't want to tell her. Thoughts kept swirling around my head over and over all day and all night. "Tell her. Callie is gorgeous and sweet and so understanding." My brain took no time to respond.
"But you don't know that. Your brother was the only one you could trust." "Tell Callie. You can't do this alone. Just get it over with. Pick up the phone." "Just do it!" "are you kidding? what a bitchy thing to do! She doesn't need to deal with this!" Thoughts just kept swirling. In and out. Round and round. Screaming; yelling so loudly. I pressed my palms into my ears, sinking down the wall curling into a ball. I heard a scream. I knew it was coming from me, but I just felt so numb and tingly, it was like it came from someone else. Then everything was quiet; yet it was not quite. It was like a silence that wasn't really... Silent. That's when I heard feet stomping, running, quickly down the hallway. Mark rams his fists into the door, yelling, "Arizona! Open up! I heard screaming! Are you all right?" He waits a second before opening the door. I feel warm tears running down my cheeks and into my mouth as he enters. He freezes. "Why are you here? How did you get in?" I sob. "Arizona, hon," Mark says," Callie was worried you weren't calling back so I decided to stop by. The door was open. And then I heard screaming." My body shakes with tears. The voices started again, in tune with my wailing. Mark just holds me; let's me cry out all my hurt and pain into his soldier. "Arizona, what just happened? Are you having a panic attack?" I just kept wailing. "Arizona, can you breathe?" By then I'm hyperventilating and turning slightly purple. "I'm calling an ambulance"
