I safely returned to the house. The military truck passing by made me even more cautious. I entered through the back door and whispered for Colton.
"Colton?"
"Here." I heard him groan.
I saw him laying on the old mattress in the attic. His arm got even worse.
"Medicine?" He faintly said.
"I only found pain killers." I whispered.
He took the pills and fell asleep right away. My thoughts consumed me. I regret leaving Jake, but I knew it was for the best. I miss my parents. I miss Paris. I miss Levi. I miss Dom. They all died. Why am I even alive?
Tears started to go down my cheeks. I miss complaining about physics. I won't even experience graduation or going to college. I laid down beside Colton. He was burning up and shivering.
"Kendall. I'm hungry."
I nodded and went to see if there was something to eat. I have to admit I was starving. In the kitchen everything was expired. Thankfully I found a pack of cereal and granola bars. I brought that with water to the attic. Colton and I ate everything quickly.
"Is that it?" Colton asked.
"Yea." I replied.
He laid back down and just stared at the ceiling in silence. He started to laugh. I look at him confused.
"I'm am going to die and I'm ok with that." He laughed some more.
"Don't say that." I looked away with tears in my eyes.
"Kendall I'm a pussy." He chuckled.
"What?" I giggled.
"I've had a crush on you for years and I never said anything."
"I know." I smiled.
I kissed him on the lips. He smiled. His bright blue eyes glowed up.
"A couple more months and we can live without fear." I said. He nodded.
Colton is my friend and even though I don't feel the same I pretended so he can be happy. Sure it might make me selfish or a monster but I love Colton as a friend. Even in the darkest times I made someone happy.
We told each other funny and embarrassing stories. We laughed for hours and I knew it was going to be the last moment with him. He was really weak and his infection consumed his body. He felt content and he smiled until his last moment.
I woke up after a few hours. It was sunny outside. I looked at Colton and he is not breathing. He is cold and still.
I started to heavily cry. I knew he was going to go. It still hurts.
I went outside not caring if I get caught. I picked beautiful white flowers I found in the garden. Colton will always be remembered as a loyal friend and a strong person. I placed the flowers on his chest.
"Colton. It was early for you to pass. However I know you are up there with Paris, Dom and Levi." Tears blurred my vision.
"I know you are laughing and not in pain anymore. I love you." I managed to say.
With those words I left the house. I'm alone now.
