Chapter 1

Eden

"So how's college sweetie?" My mom asks over the phone

I bite my lip for a second. Almost just coming out with the truth to tell her I'm not really at college but think better of it

"Great, meeting a lot of new people" which was true I have met a lot of people at the farmers market like Tayla my main costumer, Jane the nice old lady who always has her stand next to mine, and a few others from O' Malley's.

I wait a moment to see if my mother catches my lie because of my hesitation but she doesn't indicate it whatsoever

"Good, that's good" mom replies. It sounds like she is kind of preoccupied

"How's Jenna, doing? I haven't gotten a call from her in a while?" I ask my mother

She hesitates then starts to say something but stops again I wait another second before asking

"What is it mom?" My mind starts to wander to scary thoughts has something happened to her? Surely my parents would have let me know if her state had changed negatively.

"It's nothing to worry about really. It's just that she doesn't really want to talk to you right now"

I'm silent for a moment "still mad that I left?"

"Yes, sweetie, but don't worry she will get over it" I can even see my moms reassuring but not genuine smile plastered on her face

"Yeah sure mom just ask her to call me okay"

"Sure thing Hon call me soon okay?"

"Yep night love you"

"Love you too"

The heavy purr of my beloved turquoise gypsy van dies down, as I pull into my reserved spot at the local diner. I pull out my spare set of keys and unlock the back door. Marnie, the owner likes us to keep it locked with 'all the little hoodlums running around' as she likes to put it. Once inside I am greeted with the smell of coffee and fresh pie.

"Hiya darling, how is my favorite waitress?" Trisha the manager asks me

Smiling I reply "I'm pretty good, and how are you?"

I asked Genially happy, I loved Trisha she has always been someone I could lean on.

"I'm sorry to get on you so early, but we have a full house out there. Can you start early?" She asks the way she said it makes me think she believes I'll say no

"Of course, you don't have to ask me twice" I assure her

She smiles "Great! Here is an notepad and pen I need you to cover that section tonight" she points to a section in not familiar with

"Okie dokie" I say and walk over to the lockers to put my things I'm and lock it up

I was busy wiping down a table when the door bell jingled and a group of loud boys walked in. I glanced over at Trisha and she gave me a pleading look, I got the hit. I have her a reassuring smile and walked over to the boys.

"How many will that be?" I ask in as chirpy of a time as I can manage

"How many what?" One of them ask. Great he looked high

One of the guys laughed and hit the guy. Wait a second I've heard that laugh before

"Rob, you retard she was asking how many seats as in how many of us there are" the guy said in a slow mocking way

That's when it hit me. That's Jacob woods!! They cough as to get my attention that when I realize I was in a daze

"I'm sorry what?" I ask

Jacob laughs "I was telling you that we have seven of us" he informs me with a twinkle in his eye

"Of course, this way please." I turn on my heels are walk towards the section I was just cleaning up "are you guys okay with a table or would you prefer a booth?" I ask

"A table good man, thanks " replies rob if I remembered his name correct

His others friends pile into chairs and I lay out the menus

"Would you guys like something to drink?" I ask all of them

One if the fancier looking guys gruffs "we just got the menu" he says in a 'duh' voice

"Of course take your time" I reply and turn in my heels to leave I make it about three steps before I hear

"Excuse me miss we are ready"

I turn around to see that it was in fact the one who just sent me away. With a calming breath I walk back over to the table

"Alright who would like to start?"

After that it went pretty smoothly besides the fact that Rob, had fallen asleep of the table and started to snore causing a distraction for the rest of the customers. After asking them kindly to either wake him up or finish and pay their bill then soon finished and paid.

Just as I thought this nightmare with them was over Jacob, asked me what my name was. At first I remembered I wasn't wearing my name tag but then I was kind of mad. Was he serious we went to the same school for five years or more.

"Seriously Jacob?" I ask him

"You know my name?" He countered back

"First off I could have picked it up when your friends were cheering you on to chug your milkshake" I reply the memory for a second he looked so goofy and full of joy " but secondly I would think I would of picked it up after attending over five years of school with you. Not to mention my chair was literally like two spaces away from yours at graduation." I finish and he looks stunned

"You, you went to school with me?" He asked

The nerve of this guy!

"Yes I did. Your friends are leaving you" I pointed to his group of friends leaving the diner "Have a nice night" I said and turned to leave but he grabbed my forearm

"Wait, can I have your number at least?" He asked

"Nope" and with that I turned on my heels leaving behind a slightly shocked Jacob woods.
