I wrote this a really long time ago and wanted to finish it before i posted it but I never did. I might add updates to it sparatically but its not likely. My eyes fluttered open as I stared up at the sun. Itd been a few days I spent on the road, I was headed back to beach city.
The hot sun beat down on me and I saw a van driving down the road into beach city. I held out my arm, signalling them to stop, they did. Once the van stopped I walked over to the drivers window and met face to face with a man. He had long brown hair, with a huge bald spot at the top of his head and a short beard. He looked to be in his mid 40s ish. I wasnt good at telling age considering gems didnt really age ever.
"Hey! Need a ride?" He asked, in almost a too happy tone.
I smiled back at him, hoping he hadn't noticed the blue hue to my skin and the blue gem peeking out of the top of my low cut, off the shoulder sweater.
"Yeah, actually, I need to get to beach city." I said, trying to discretely pull my shirt further up to hide my gem.
My gem needed to breathe, but I was pretty used to the uncomftorable feeling of covering it. Living on earth usually meant having to hide my gem. Luckily for me, my skin tone was only slightly off from normal human skin tones, so I just looked a bit paler than most. And considering it wasn't too uncommon for humans to die their hair, my dark blue hair wasn't too much of a giveaway.
"Thats where I'm headed! Hop in!" The enthusiastic man said, gestuing for me to get in the passenger seat.
I made my way into the passenger side dead, buckling up of course.
"Than you, and, I never caught your name." I commented, trying to start some form of small talk for the ride.
"I'm Greg, Greg Universe! You?" He responded, smiling at me as he drove.
"(Y-Y/n)." I stuttered out, struggling to remember the human name I'd given myself just a year or so prior.
"Thats a nice name." Greg complimented.
The ride to beach city was long, and filled with Greg's storys of how he used to be in a band, and even got his music featured in a few commercials. I just smiled and nodded mindlessly. I couldn't care less about his stories, but I didnt want to be rude to my only ride into beach city.
We arrived at beach city and I marveled at how similar it looked since I'd been there last. It still had the beautiful beach view, and the donut shop was in the same place. Naturally, I headed there first. I opened the door, the little bell ringing out to the employees and signaling someone had entered. Sadie looked up and me and beamed.
"(Y/n)!" She said loudly, smiling at me from over the counter.
Lars turned around, shocked by my sudden return.
"(Y-y/n)! What're you doing back?" He asked, clearly confused.
"I just felt like it was time to come back." I said casually as I approached the counter.
"By the way, can I get a donut? Peanut." I said, smiling at Lars as he got my order.
"Make that two!" I heard a boys voice ring out.
I turned to find myself face to face with a short boy who looked around 13 or 14 with big fluffy brown hair, jeans, and a red shirt with a bright yellow star in the middle.
"Hey! Nice to meet you!" He said as he took the donuts from Lars and paid for them both, handing me one as he munched on the other.
"H-hey. I'm (y/n)." I said, smiling at him as I took a bite out of my donut.
Gems didnt have to eat but I enjoyed the feeling.
"Cool! I'm Steven!" He said, finishing his donut.
I still hadn't even eaten half of mine. It amazed me how fast humans could devour food when they were hungry. Obviously I didnt know what it felt like, but I imagined it was painful because of how eager they were to solve the problem asap.
"So what brings you to beach city?" Steven asked, excited to see a new face.
"Nothing really. I used to live near here a few years ago, and I decided it was time to come back." I explained, self conciusly readjusting my shirt to keep my gem hidden.
"Couldnt stay away from beach city? Well I'll see you around (y/n)!" He said, leaving the store.
I instantly relaxed one he was out of sight.
"God I hate social interactions." I chuckled as Lars and Sadie laughed along.
"You know, Stevens a gem too." Lars said, leaning on the counter.
Lars and Sadie knew I was a gem, they were some of the only people who I let know, and so far, they'd kept the secret well.
"How? He looks like a human." I asked intrigued.
"He's half human or whatever." Lars said nonchalantly.
"Oh! And he lives with some other gems! Maybe you guys could be friends!" Sadie suggested, seeming excited.
"Maybe..." I trailed off, thinking of the possibility.
"Welp, I'll see you guys later, I've got an apartment to rent!" I said, leaving the store.
I wandered the streets of beach city, trying to find an affordable place to stay. There was this one beat down apartment at the edge of the city that didnt cost too much. Being desperate, I agreed, and rented the place. It was pretty small, but it would do.
I ran a hot bath as the sun began to set and the dim lights in my apartment began to flicker a bit. Dipping into the bath, I could see the little bit of light the sun provided through the bathroom window fade away as I was left in the yellow hue of the old ceiling lights in my apartment. At least it had hot water, and it was affordable, I couldn't complain too much.
