I shifted my focus from panic to the sounds of someone or something coming straight toward me. I thought I heard my name being called. I strained to listen but the roaring of my blood in my ears made it almost impossible to make anything out. The sound was getting closer by the second. My heart jumped into my throat when I heard my name being called again. This time closer.
I gasped, letting out a forceful yip of surprise and felt my heart actually skip a beat or two. The burst of shock to my system worked like magic. I jumped to my feet and stumbled backward in a daze, Adam's bloody body fell out of the corn. He rushed up to me and wrapped strong arms around my shoulders in a painful hug. I wanted to protest against the discomfort but words kept falling out if his mouth.
"I'm sorry I couldn't stay away. I know I disobeyed your orders but when I turned back and you weren't there...I panicked and tried to get back to you. Are you okay?" I nodded. He pulled far enough away so that he could see my face.
"What the hell happened? Why did you want me to leave so bad? Why are you covered in mud?"
"Trust me." I breathed burying my face in the warmth of his neck. "You don't want to know." I inhaled clinging to his skin. It was a welcomed change from the odor of grave-rot permeating the area like a cloud of death.
"You smell incredible," I whispered, eager to change the subject. Adam responded by giving me another bone-crushing hug.
"Well, you smell like a bag of pennies." I don't know how he managed to stay so calm.
"Don't you ever get nervous?" He shrugged nonchalantly with a smile.
"In the beginning, but I was trained scene I was a kid to be a warrior."
"Really? I didn't know that."
"It's a long story, but I have a feeling you will figure it out."
We walked in silence after that, to beat up to do anything else but walk. As we emerged the maze firefighters where everywhere. Farah and my mom rushed up to us followed by a swarm of anxious bodies. Someone ushered Adam away from me, while someone else wrapped me in a warm and fuzzy blanket before thrusting me into a truck with my mom, Farah, and two other people I didn't recognize.
'You're practically blue!" Mom cried.
"I'm fine." I insisted, embarrassed by the eyeballs trained on me.
"Where did you go?" Farah asked.
"I got lost. I didn't have a chance of staying in that house. Where are we going?"
"Lytwyn Castle." My heart drop when the driver spoke. I've been avoiding that place scene Marcus told me about it now they were delivering me right to it.
"Where's Adam?"
"Calm down Sarah. There's no need to think about that scum anymore."
"What do you mean Farah? Where is he!"
"Calm down sweetheart. You've lost a lot of blood. Jack will fix you up just like he did at the hospital."
"Fix me!"
"Yes dear. Don't you remember? He brought you back from the dead, thin signed your release papers, and took you home. It was a good thing he did. We could have lost the farm if it wasn't for him."
I was in total shock at this new information and that totally did not happen. I blacked out at the hospital with the nurse. He must have gotten me out of the hospital but he totally did not know how I got back to the living. We drove fast down the twisty county highway while the driver white knuckled it. I tried to distract myself by talking to Farah but she wouldn't answer any of my questions. I felt a sinister feeling surround me as we got closer.
