Nicholas was in the palace, sitting in class next to his older brother David. The class room was in the left wing of the palace. It wasn't very big, but considering that there was only five students, it didn't need to be. David, Nicholas, Jr., Judith and Raspberry were the only students.

Jr's real name was Eagle, named after his father. He was a tribrid, meaning he was from three different tribes. He was mainly Seawing but he had ruff behind his ears like a Rainwing and scattered silver scales under his wings like a Nightwing. Jr. tended to be a bit shy around new dragons and he almost always followed the rules.

Judith was a Rainwing. She tended to keep her scales shades of dark blue and black. Judith, unlike Jr. was a rule breaker and very outgoing.

Nicholas was somewhere in the middle. He followed the rules unless something dire went against them. He also wasn't as shy as his brother, but he did tend to be cautious around new dragons, unlike his sister.

Raspberry was the only dragonet in the clan who wasn't royal. She was Blueberry's daughter. Her mother, Honeydew, left them to join the traitors when Raspberry was still an egg. The traitors is a clan made up of Bladerunner's supposed old friends. Friends don't try to kill you.

"Nicholas. Please pay attention."

Nicholas whipped his head up and looked at the front of the room at his teacher, a mudwing named Deer. Deer was nice, but he could be fierce if need be. Rumor was that he was raised by his crazy older sister but no one ever asked. He was the oldest one in the clan, only by a year. Nicholas was pretty sure that his mother liked Deer but he never confronted her about it.

"Sorry sir. I'll pay attention." said Nicholas, ashamed of the fact he wasn't paying attention.

"Suck up." whispered Judith.

"I prefer the term 'being respectable'." responded Nicholas. Judith went back to drawing pictures of Plum, one of the adult clan members.

Ignoring their conversation, Deer continued on with a speech. Sometimes the students thought that he was worse than Starflight, JMA's librarian. According to David, Starflight was worse.

"Look, I didn't like school anymore than you do, but this could mean life and death one day. I hope it never does but you never know. Does everyone understand?"

"Yes sir." all the students replied in unison.

Deer went back to teaching. Today's lesson was about how to set traps for both prey and dragons. Nicholas went back to daydreaming about... someone, but he asked his enchanted pencil to take notes on his scroll for him. The pencil was animus touched by David.

Nicholas heard talon steps near the doorway. They were to small and light to be one of the adults. He looked up at the blackboard to see Deer's back turned, the perfect opportunity to slip out of class early.

Nicholas scanned the room, only moving his eyes so as not to bring attention to himself. Judith, Jr., and Raspberry were missing, it was only him and David left in the room.

"I should probably follow them." thought Nicholas. "They could get hurt." Using the few assassin skills he had learned, Nicholas slipped out of the room to follow his siblings and friend.

He would be grateful he had decided to follow them. But he would also wish he hadn't.
