the last 2 days of the week dragged by. it might've very well been because of joba's anticipation for saturday or maybe the fact that his mother hadn't left the couch since wednesday night and sadie was now failing both science and math. regardless of his situation, packing to leave for his weekend at romil's on saturday morning was an absolute dream. joba crammed a few shirts and an extra pair of pants into his school backpack and surveyed his bedroom that he shared with sadie just before getting up to leave. "bye ma." he said quietly as he unlocked the front door to his house.

"is your dad home, russ?" she mumbled, half asleep. joba bit back a remark about how much he hated his real name.

"i think he's just out getting groceries. he'll be back soon," he said, slowly opening the door.

"okay. have fun, babe." his mom waved from the couch.

"see ya," he mumbled as he made his way out to his car. henrietta, his 1996 red ford explorer was sitting in her usual spot. joba tossed his bag into the passenger side and hopped into the driver's seat. as he pulled away, he rolled the windows down because despite it being early october, texas never failed to make each and every day almost uncomfortably warm. he popped in an old kanye cd and texted romil that he was on his way.

30 minutes and a stop at starbucks for a couple of iced coffees later, joba pulled into romil's driveway. it was odd to see his friend living in a house instead of an apartment. joba hopped out of his truck and gazed upon his best friend's new digs. it was decently sized; a single story home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms- definitely an upgrade from his two bed one bath apartment that he and his family of four squeezed into. romil had rambled on multiple occasions over the phone about how amazing it was to have his own room for all of his production equipment. he knocked on the alien door and the all too familiar bushy-browed face of romil answered with a beaming smile. "joba!" he shouted, throwing his arms around the taller boy. joba lifted his arms to preserve the coffees while his best friend squeezed his torso. "i've missed you so much," the blond said.

"oh, god, don't even get me started." romil laughed as he let go of joba and took his coffee. the boys walked into the house together and joba took in all of the new sights. a large flat screen was mounted on the wall with a fireplace nestled underneath. the same busted, old couch was still in the living room though. "come see my bedroom," romil said before joba could finish analyzing the room. romil trotted down the hall and joba strode at his heels. the shorter boy flung the door open, revealing a large bedroom that was absolutely decked out in production paraphernalia. joba's jaw hung open as he checked out romil's new setup. "this is dope," he marveled.

"i've been saving up for all this for like two years now." romil said.

"holy shit," joba grinned, "i'm so excited to use this. we're recording something tonight."

"fuck yeah." romil laughed. "oh- by the way, some of my new friends are coming over in like two hours. only one of them is sleeping over though- if that's cool with you."

hearing romil say 'new friends' struck a chord in joba's heart that triggered his stomach to drop. he hated the idea of their old group being replaced by a new posse that wouldn't understand romil's sensitivity half as much as he, merlyn, and dom did. "that's fine." joba said.

"cool. i think you'll really like them; matt, ciaran, and ian." romil explained.

"nice." joba bobbed his head. "wanna watch something?"

"sure." romil hopped onto the futon that sat on the longest wall of his room parallel to the tv. joba situated himself next to his best friend and continued to marvel at the extraordinary production setup that he acquired. he couldn't wait to make something new; they hadn't made music together since romil left in early july, which was an uncomfortably long time considering the two had been pumping out bangers since he and romil became friends- it was their 'escape'.
