"so did you let him?" romil asked.
joba shook his head no and looked at his best friend with a perplexed gaze. directly after making out with matt he stopped by romil's house to vent. "he has a girlfriend, no?"
"they're.. more or less just a thing." romil shrugged. "it's like an open relationship."
"it doesn't matter anyway. i'm not gay." joba said confidently.
romil widened his eyes and let out a heavy sigh, "i'm not sure that making out with a guy is the straightest behavior to engage in." he said.
joba pursed his lips; romil was absolutely correct in saying that, but when joba kissed matt it didn't mean anything- they were just fucking around. joba was lonely and wanted to kiss someone and matt... joba wasn't sure of matt's excuse, but he was probably just going through a phase. joba never thought too hard about the kisses and casual flirting that occurred between him and matt, for part of him was afraid he'd actually catch feelings.at this point, matt was just something to entertain joba when he was bored.
"real talk though, jobe," romil said quietly, "imagine he asked you out on an actual date tomorrow, what would you say?"
"depends." joba shrugged, "where are we going?"
"you're getting coffee then going to the nature preserve." the wavy-haired boy said.
"damn." joba huffed. of course romil would say that, he knew damn well that joba would never pass up coffee and that the preserve in his county was his absolute favorite place in the world. "i would have to say yes." he said finally.
romil raised his eyebrows. "but what if he refused to sit in the field?"
joba laughed. whenever he and romil went to the preserve he always forced romil to sit in a field full of overgrown wildflowers that attracted dozens upon dozens of butterflies. it shocked romil at first when joba made him sit down in the middle of their walk just to look at flowers, especially considering that just an hour prior to their first ever walk joba had gotten so angry that he drove a fist through his wall and he would shout and curse during the whole car ride there. joba told him in the softest voice the tall boy could muster that he liked the pale colors and the sweet aroma of the overgrown shrubbery calmed him down. four years later and nothing changed, when it was warm and sunny out and joba was angry romil would always bring him to their field.
"i'd be okay with it, that's our thing," he said.
"joba!" romil yelled, jutting his lower lip out, "you've really never done that with anybody else?"
joba shook his head 'no', "have you?" he asked.
"no," romil said, "that makes me so happy!" he beamed. joba smiled bashfully and picked at his fingernails. he looked up from under his brows as romil began to speak again. "you know that matt really likes you, right?"
"what's he said about me?" joba asked.
"he thinks you're actually so cute. and that you're sweet and funny and kind, and also that you're the only person he'd want a serious relationship with." the shorter boy said, stifling a huge grin.
"oh," the blond smiled, "really? the only person?"
"that's what he said."
"that's really sweet." joba pressed his lips together. "i dunno. i guess it wouldn't hurt to experiment?"
"well, do you want to date him?" romil asked.
"truthfully, i think the only reasons i haven't yet is that he has a girlfriend and i'm straight."
"stop trying to convince yourself that you're straight!" romil laughed. "nobody you're friends with is gonna bear any mind to the fact you're dating a guy."
"i know, but my family-"
"you don't have to tell them right away."
"i know." joba sighed, "what do you think?"
"about matt? i think you should go for it." romil said.
"maybe i will." the blond shrugged. he stood up and heaved his friend from the floor and pulled him into a massive hug. "thank you, romil."
"of course." romil replied, his voice muffled by joba's chest. "i'm always here if you need to chat, swing by at any time."
"you know i will." joba chuckled before walking out to his truck. he leaned his head against the steering wheel and closed his eyes without starting the vehicle. never in a million years would he have even considered himself having feelings for another boy, but here he was, contemplating beginning a relationship with one. it couldn't be so bad; since matt lived in a different county he could easily keep his relationship a secret from the school and he knew that merlyn and dom would be nothing but supportive. matt was cute too, and he liked how he made joba feel small and sensitive despite his large stature and tough demeanor. feeling 'inferior' was comfortable and he enjoyed that he didn't have to be the adamant one in the relationship.
as joba drove back home, the idea of dating matt felt less and less foreign and more like something joba would actually enjoy doing. throughout the course of the night, joba became so fond of the idea that he even managed to get off to the idea of matt and just as he reached his climax, joba finally accepted the idea that he was not straight.
