Spottedpelt darted ahead, trying to catch up to her bundle of WindClan cats. Vinestar and Jayheart were at the front of the attacking patrol, and Spottedpelt was taking the rear of it. Dawn lights were glimmering in the sky, turning the WindClan cats' pelts blossom.

"Oh, StarClan.." Flakepelt muttered restlessly, his tail dragging limply against the ground.

The WindClan cats were nearing closer to ShadowClan's border; and they were venturing toward the destination from the edge of the grassy, WindClan moor. Vinestar fiercely, yet so nonchalantly plodded up the rolling hills after what he forced his Clan into. Jayheart trailed up beside his leader, containing the same pace and expression of him.

Spottedpelt's fur bristled in uneasiness. This is it.. there's nothing you can do to can convince any cat to stop this. Would she die in this battle? The realization came to her that it could be likely. ShadowClan cats had a reputation of being fierce and brutal. But Vinestar seemed almost more aggressive. He was willing to put his Clan in danger for even something quite small. That element of the story could drive ShadowClan on even more to kill us!

Spottedpelt could see slight pine tree figures in the distance. Another round of realization split through her. My Clan could die! She was falling behind in the group of WindClan cats as she felt fear charge through her.

Calm down, calm down.. Spottedpelt realized she had dug her claws into the ground and all of her fur was bristling with terror. Fiercetalon brushed beside her.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

Spottedpelt gulped and stopped the indignant comment Of course, mouse-brain! from escaping her jaws. "Not really," she mewed. "Vinestar is putting us in an unnecessary battle." She felt awkward during the heartbeats it took Fiercetalon to reply. Should I be more of a fighter? Is it normal to have this over abundance of battle?

"It's not completely unnecessary," Fiercetalon reasoned. His response made Spottedpelt feel worse and doubt herself even more. "ShadowClan has kits that are rightfully ours. They've been too soft lately."

"Maybe you're right," Spottedpelt lied in sigh, trying to be believable in escaping the conversation. She and Fiercetalon were lurking behind the crowd, and as the two felines stopped their conversation, a resentful hiss came from Spottedpelt's mother.

"Hurry up, you two!" Amberstripe hissed in a whisper. "We're WindClan, not those sluggish RiverClan cats across the river. And keep quiet or else ShadowClan may hear us!"

Spottedpelt, for once, felt relieved about her mother's bitter words that let her escape the conversation. She swept passed Fiercetalon, silently blending inside the cluster of WindClan cats. She wondered if none of the cats in the group Vinestar selected for her could empathize with her. Vinestar purposely chose this group to attack the heart of ShadowClan, didn't he?

She fell behind in the crowd. Maybe she was wrong about all the cats. Feelings of uneasiness was wafted into the air; any cat could scent it. The pine trees no longer felt so far. Spottedpelt felt a new feeling; grim acceptance. She knew there was nothing she could do to stop her leader.

She padded along the glade's edge and gazed deeper into the forest ahead. She realized she could not argue with or escape fate. Maybe the battle would be dangerous; even deadly, but every warrior has to go through it at least once. Grave steps passed the time towards the fray. The sky lit up with the sun's early light. Cats always said morning brought new beginnings, but to Spottedpelt it now brought new endings.

"We're almost there," Vinestar whispered, enough for his cats to hear him. Spottedpelt could see the pine forest several fox-lengths away. Vinestar glimpsed around at his group of cats. "Fiercetalon and Lionrage, go after Shimmerkit," he ordered. "Amberstripe and Flakepelt, go after Moonkit. And Spottedpelt," he continued. "You're going after Brinekit." Of course he'd give me the assignment to fetch the blind and deaf kit. Oh well, I never wanted to start this battle. I just want to protect my Clanmates. "The rest of us will go after the rest of ShadowClan that are in camp."
