thomas's pov.

minho and i had been running the maze long after dusk to see if we could find any unseen secrets only seen at night.

we had been looking for a known pillar, one of the tallest in the maze at the edge of section 3 when the sound of metal colliding with stone could be heard in the distance. shivers ran down my spine. Although i had spent a night in the maze before my fear of being stung only managed to increase as we lost more and more people to the infection.

time passed slowly, the maze was silent, not even the sound of doors changing could be heard. this was minho and i's eighth night in the maze, out in the open, with no walls to keep us safe.

the sun indicated it was roughly in-between one and three o'clock when minho had fallen asleep, it was my turn to keep watch. my eyes scanned over the vine covered walls in the looks of any changes when something suddenly caught my eye.

a person? I rubbed my eyes in disbelief and convinced myself my lack of sleep was causing me to almost hallucinate but I worked through my tiredness and woke minho up for his second hour watch.

another hour passed quickly in my sleep when minho shook me lightly to wake me up. "thomas wake up, I need my shucking beauty sleep." his body was wrapped tightly in one of the two blankets newt had given us for or journey.

the other blanket was neatly wrapped over my shoulders as I sat on the edge of the small pillar, my legs hanging over the edge, swinging slowly.

after what felt like days the sun finally began to rise beyond the walls. it poured into the maze slowly. almost never reaching the ground below.

once the sun full emerged I woke minho, "you ready?"

"gimme five minutes shank." minho layer his head back down onto the stone pillar. "tomorrow we will head back to the glade to grab supplies."

half an hour it took to finally get minho up and running. the two of us climbed down the large piece of stone, keeping a tight grip on the vines as we made our way to the ground.

the rest of the day was spent running around the maze, i felt hopeless, we were looking for something, anything. we needed hope.

I found our journey in the maze to be quite escaping sometimes, it was all still so new to be so each corner was something new, or more of a new corridor made of stone and vines. I had stayed close to minho the entire journey, and I wasn't about to allow that to change so I kept around two strides behind him as we ran.

my eyes scanned the area, spotting a red, faded number seven painted on the wall. the gaps between walls grew drastically when entering the outer sections of the maze, and the walls became more unique.

by noon we had spotted a pillar almost a replica of the one in section three and decided that was where we'd stay the night. it seemed to become easier each day to climb up the towering pillars with only delicate green vines as a support to pull myself up.

as I reached the top, minho already had one of the few sandwiches frypan had made down his throat. "my god, he makes the best god damn food." minho groans with his mouth practically full.

it didn't take long for the two of us to finish eating, so I sat on the edge of the pillar, legs hanging over the edge once more and allowed myself to take in my surroundings.

"for a so called prison, this place can be kinda beautiful."

"sorry to break it to you shank, but you'll get sick of it soon enough."
