Aria was walking her usual route home from the book store where she helped out throughout her summer. She felt weird about going home today; this would be the last time she walked this route. It may very well be her last day in Seattle.
The thought of being an earthly being amongst a large population of celestial beings made her stomach churn. Aria came from a human background with few elementals down her lineage and most of them were water users -like her father. Yet here she was, an air user like her mother.
Aria pushed the front door open, expecting to not be alone. "Dad, I'm home," she called but no reply came. "Dad?" She lowered her purse and phone onto the dinner table. "Dad," she called again as she headed for the kitchen. She held her hand behind her back and summoned a gush of wind to swirl in it. "Dad?" She walked towards the island counter to peek over it.
"Surprise, Ar..." Before the male voice could finish, Aria forced the swirling wind at the man. He flew into the living area and crashed into the wall with a grunt, leaving an envelope to wither to the ground along with a lengthy gift box.
"Dad," Aria rushed to him and helped him to his feet. "I'm so sorry! I thought you were a predator. Why would you do that?!"
Grunting, her father walked back towards the kitchen to pick up the envelope that had her name written on it and the gift box. "This envelope came a while after you left, this morning. It's written in Cosmic rays." Aria quickly strutted into the kitchen and grabbed the letter from her father. "Where you going," he asked as he leaned over her shoulder.
"Silver Crow Academy," disbelief was in her voice and her father was frozen stiff. "Please tell me I'm not dreaming." The house was filled with dead stillness until Jasper -Aria's pet hedgehog- scratched her jeans and began squeaking at them. "Dad?"
Her father nodded then added, "I see it, Aria." The house was briefly quiet before she huffed and started laughing uncontrollably. "Congratulations, baby girl." He pulled her into a hug. "You mom would be proud." She started shrieking and jumping excitedly. "Whoa, whoa! Slow down firecracker," he started. "These were your mom's. I'd always thought you would be my little water user but, you're your mom's air kid. She always said that our air user would be special. Here."
He handed her the lengthy gift box and Aria's excitement burned even more than earlier. She opened it to find two blue fans folded up, lying next to each other. Cautiously, Aria picked up the fans and found them to be heavy despite the soft material that was webbed. She opened the fans and saw that the joints were made out of metal and the tips were visibly sharp.
"These were mom's?"
"Since the end of middle school. While she was pregnant with you, she could never stop talking about the day she'd give these to you." Aria rested on fan on the kitchen counter then began flutter the one in her hand. Immediately a small twister formed and puffed towards her father. "Careful, those aren't ordinary fans; they amplify your powers and those metal joints can be used if your powers can't be."
"This is Mortal Combat weaponry," she commented. She studied the blades and noticed the ones on the ends had engravings on them 'R.M' "R.M?"
"Rebecca Montgomery. Proud mother and beautiful wife." Aria dropped her head into her father's shoulder as a few tears dropped from her eyes. "I know, Ria. I miss her too." He kissed her crown and squeezed her into his ribs. "Note, that we will always be proud of you. Both of us."
"Thank you, dad," she began with a wry smirk, "I really appreciate it." Aria claimed her dad in another hug and -again- he kissed her crown. Sighing she started, "I better go pack the rest of my stuff." She began to backtrack with immense excitement radiating off her. "I'm so excited," she shrieked then slipped as she tried to jump over a carpet.
"You good?"
"Yip," she chuckled then got up and bolted for her bedroom. Her father was still in the kitchen, thinking proud father thoughts. The house went back to its usual serene muteness until, Aria exclaimed: "I'm a Silver Crow student!" He couldn't suppress his laughter and so, he covered his mouth as the proud tears began to fall.
He whispered proudly, "that's my girl."
