"They want me to have lunch with them for the rest of the week!" Cady hopped,

"That is TITS!" Janis jumped and held on to a confused Cady's jacket.

"She means that's great!" You translated with a friendly smile.

"Right Caddie, we want you to sit with them and come back to us, tell us every dumb or stupid thing they say!" Janis jumped at the chance to get back at Regina it's all she's ever wanted to do, it's a life goal.

"Janis I don't think we-" She covered your mouth in one swoop and waited for Cady's answer,

"Sounds like fun!" She said with some mixed emotions.

"That's amazing! It's tits! I have no words Caddie!" It was Janis' time to be the puppy and she wore a smile you hadn't seen in a long time.

"Do you have a pink shirt I can borrow?"

The smile faded. Cady's question is innocent enough and requires a simple yes-or-no answer, so why is this so hard for her? So hard for both of you.

Janis had been wearing pink on Wednesdays ever since she could remember. It's a tradition you had both been participating in from the time her and Regina became best friends in the fourth grade and, that time when the plastics invited you in as one of their own! Despite their current friendship status, you have both been unable to give it up.

Most of the time it's subtle. A small accessory, a pin on janis' jacket, a tank top hidden under layers of black mesh and distressed denim or a small pin or hair tie. But not this week. You had already helped Janis lay out a pink and burgundy striped sweater for tomorrow. A gift from Damian. He never mentions it, but you know he knows the secret. Instead of judging you, which is what Janis would probably would do if the roles were reversed, he just keeps "accidentally" leaving his t-shirts and sweaters and socks in varying shades of pink hidden around her bedroom. Some of the things she finds still have tags on them and it simultaneously warms and breaks her heart to think of her best friend spending his money on her so she can...

***

What is she doing exactly? Mourning the loss of her now-ex best friend? She feels shitty even thinking about the fact that she misses someone like Regina George when her perfect Damian and, of corse, (Y/N) are everything she could possibly need in and friend and a life partner, a soulmate. She really doesn't deserve him... or you and Janis knows that.

But that's not the only reason if she's being honest. Wearing pink is her way of silently protesting having her former identity stripped away without her consent. It's hard to believe it now, but Janis used to be a girly girl. (I mean, who do you think came up with pink Wednesdays in the first place? Regina? Bitch please.) They'd spend hours playing dress-up and giving each other makeovers. They'd even choreograph little dance numbers and put on shows for Mrs. George who was like the mother she never had.

Then one day with no warning it was over. Connection severed beyond repair. Regina and her little pink army had destroyed her for fun and suddenly she would rather die than be anything that even resembled them. Soon all her pretty pink dresses were replaced with paint-splashed denim, her pristine white sneakers tossed aside for black combat boots, her luscious brunette curls bleached and shaved (by accident.) Every day was a battle and she needed her Armor. This small weakness one day a week was all she allowed herself.

Cady's question brings it all flooding back to her. She can hear Damian scrambling to come to her rescue so she doesn't have to admit what they both know is true. That there's a pile of items fitting that exact description hidden in the very back of her closet. She could hear you trying to change the subject, asking Cady about what she's taking for her classes.

She could say yes. Cady wouldn't think anything of it. Damian is too generous and supportive to call her on it. But suddenly she's 12 again. She's right back in that North Shore Middle School hallway, standing in confusion as Regina casually rips her heart into pieces for sport with you standing next to her, defending her again and her holding your hand for some mental support as you fight the battle. So she does what she always does. Denial, as they say, is not just a river in Egypt. Sometimes it's a high school girl just trying to make it through the day.

"No." She says in disgust!

"I have some pink things but Regina wouldn't approve of them." You piped up, defending Janis from any unwanted questions.

"Oh why not-"

"I do!" Damian interrupted quickly!

"Brilliant!" Cady smiled and carried on her way to calculus class with Damian whilst you and Janis looked at each other for comport. Janis was almost in tears, and she sniffed.

"Janis..." you muttered with sympathy, as she ran into your arms.

"I can't take it anymore..." Janis sobbed into your shoulder.

"Sure you can! Your one of the strongest, bravest people I know, you deserve more, you deserve love and happiness!"

This, this is why Janis doesn't deserve you...
