the little mermaid

when i was a little girl
i never understood how ariel could give up her life,
for a boy!

it was bizarre to me.
if i had a gorgeous tail
and long silky hair
with a gorgeous voice
and my father a king

i'd swim my days away
"under the sea"
happy as i could be

but when i met you?
i was a fish out of water-
and i finally got it.

had someone told me it couldn't be you and i
had there been a boundary between us?

i too would've been
"sick of swimming,
ready to stand"

i too would've willingly
given my voice
to someone promising me you

and
i would gladly give up
my mermaid fantasy for you
because a lifetime of swimming alone
is nothing
compared to a day of standing with you
