Chapter Fourteen
When questions arise
"Jane, where have you been all day?" I heard Kyle ask from the seat across from me. It was well into the afternoon and we were all eating dinner in the ball room. Tonight, I was to start getting ready to leave; the more I thought about it, the more nervous I got.
"I spent the day with Abigail; we walked into town and had a girl's day." I said, bringing my fork up to my mouth to take a bite. He nodded his head while he was chewing, placing his fork down on the plate. He looked at me curiously, like he knew something. Instantly my heart rate sped up and my mind went on overdrive.
"What about you?" I asked nervously. I finally broke the eye contact and looked back down on my plate, moving my peas around. He couldn't know what I was doing, it was impossible. The servant took my plate away and replaced it with some sort of green ice cream.
"I was with your father all day, walked into his office and had a men's day." He said sarcastically. I couldn't help the small smile that grew on my face as I slowly ate my dessert. Marie had come out a couple minutes later, saying dinner was over and we were to finish up. Kyle quickly ate all his food while I slowly ate the rest of mine. Once he was done he got up and walked over to me, holding his hand out for me to take. I took it gracefully.
"Jane, I actually need to speak to you." I heard my mother say from behind us once we reached my bedroom door. I turned around and gave Kyle a quick kiss on the cheek.
"I'll be back soon; don't wait up for me." I said, hoping he wouldn't and I would be able to quietly pack a little bit. My mother took my hand and led me to the guest room before closing the door behind her.
"Marie told me about the situation, are you sure this is what you want to do?" She asked, looking into my eyes worriedly. I smiled at the thought of living with Neville, instantly feeling happy once again. I nodded my head vigorously.
"I understand you want to be free, if only I made the same decision as you are I could have been happy as well. The best plan is in two days. We have guests coming over from the far lands; he wouldn't be able to tell them you have gone missing. I'll have Marie make a basket of food for you guys; do you know where you are going? I want to you tell someone once your there, so that word gets to me. How long do you plan on going for? Make sure you're safe, you know your fathers tactics very well. Oh, I'm going to miss you!" She wailed, bringing me into a hug after her long interrogation.
"I think he has a place in mind, I'll tell Rochelle and she will tell Marie, who would most likely tell you once we arrive. Everything is going to be fine, mother." I said, giving her a reassuring smile. She gave me a quick hug before saying her goodbyes as I went to find Kyle.
Once I got into the room he was already asleep, under the covers and snoring slightly. I looked at the wooden desk in the corner of the room, lighting the candle that was on top of it for light. I got out my piece of paper and began to write my letter to Kyle.
The birds chirping outside woke me up from my deep sleep. I turned around to face Kyle but found he wasn't there. I closed my eyes again and let out a deep breath. The bed was so warm and cozy that I didn't want to get up. After a couple more minutes, I dragged myself out of bed and went to look for Kyle.
"There you are," I stated. I found him in the garden, drinking some tea while watching the squirrels play with each other. He turned his head slightly to look at me and then went back to observing.
"I've been looking everywhere for you." I said, sitting down next to him. He simply nodded his head, ignoring any vocal contact. I stayed silent, confused as to what I had done. He put the cup down onto the china plate with a loud clunk and stood back up.
"I have to walk the castle grounds. Maybe we can go on a ride?" He asked, holding his hand down for me to take. I hesitantly grabbed it and we walked towards the stables.
"Hello?" Kyle said, once we were inside. I instantly walked towards Cherry, petting her mane lovingly.
"Oh... Sir Kyle." Neville said, standing up straight. I turned around and gave him a small smile, he returned one back.
"What can I do for you two?" He asked, making strict eye contact with Kyle.
"We would like to go on a ride." He pointed towards Cherry and his horse; Neville got the saddles and helped Kyle get on his first before coming towards me. He didn't say anything to me, but a couple times brushed his hand against mine, turning my face a slight shade of pink which he silently laughed at. I rolled my eyes as I grabbed Cherry and got on top of her.
Kyle was silent the whole time, not once saying a word as we took our short, ten minute ride. I tried to start up a conversation once, but he brushed it off with a shake of his head. Did I do something wrong? Has he found out about Neville and I, why isn't he doing anything about it if that's the case?
He jumped off his horse and walked away without another word. I slide down and off Cherry, giving Neville an apologetic look.
"What's his problem?" He whispered, nodding towards Kyle's retreating back. I shrugged my shoulders and started to walk away before I felt Neville's hand yank me back to him.
"It happens tomorrow night, are you prepared?" I nodded my head before giving him a quick kiss and running after Kyle.
"Kyle, what's wrong, what have I done wrong?" I asked, grabbing his hand and yanking him to a stop right in front of me.
"You didn't do anything wrong, I just need to think about something." He snapped, yanking his hand back and walking away faster than he had been before. I stood there, utterly confused as to why he was acting this way. It made no sense what-so-ever.
"Just ignore him, I try to." I heard Abigail's voice behind me. I turned around and looked at her confused.
"He's probably just under a lot of stress with your father; he does get the throne in a couple day's you know..." She said, picking up her basket of flowers off the grassy field and walking away towards the castle.
I made my way back to my room and shut the door, bringing the note out of my desk drawer and re-reading it through; making sure everything was explained well. After my satisfaction I made sure I had all the clothes necessary and packed, ready to go in a moment's notice.
I walked towards dinner a couple hours later and sat down in my normal seat. My father kept looking at Kyle and I curiously, while everyone stayed silent. I looked up at Kyle and noticed he was already looking at me, with a saddened expression on his face. I felt guilty as I looked away almost instantly. He couldn't possibly know, right?
