Chapter Fifteen

Home

Within the next three hours I was to be gone. Away from my responsibility as Lady and leave Kyle on his own, to rule my village. I trusted him; I truly thought he was going to do a good job as King.

I was currently down in the kitchen, helping Marie grab some food and put it into a basket for us. I had my small bag packed with clothes and they were hiding in the stables along with Neville's things. Rochelle was going to meet us and give us directions to a place not out of the kingdom, but far enough to not make it obvious.

The feeling of warm biscuits and the aroma around me made it hard to leave. I was going to miss everyone, and everything. My whole life I wanted to run away, and now that I had the chance I wasn't so sure what to think.

"Rochelle told Abigail that she would be staying with you for a couple months in case the guards stop by the cabin, she's your alibi." Marie said, putting a blanket on top of the basket to hide the food. I nodded my head, listening to every piece of advice she was giving me. She stopped what she was doing and walked over to me, giving me a tight hug.

"I'll miss you." She whispered. I tried my best not to cry. Once I was done getting the food prepared I watched as she left towards the stables to give it all to Neville. His parents weren't so forgiving to me, but they eventually came to terms. They're happy as long as we all have a nice dinner once a week, at our house, of course.

I went up stairs to find my mother, who was currently in the ball room, dancing with my father. I stood behind the stairs banister, keeping hidden as I watched how happy my father looked. My mother was forcing her smile, I could tell, but I could also tell she loved him.

Instead of interrupting them I walked around to find Kyle, who was in my dad's office, looking out the window. I watched him for a couple minutes, trying to figure out what he was doing. I knocked on the door once I got in, he didn't turn around.

"I become King tomorrow, Jane. Do you know how much pressure this is on me?" He mumbled the last part, looking at me reflection from the window.

"Is that why you're being distant from me lately?" I asked, thinking back to the cold shoulder. Then he turned around fast, looking at me with a curious look on his face.

"No, that's not why." I looked at him confused before he changed the subject, like he always does.

"I don't know what to think right now, there's so much going on." I nodded my head, agreeing, but probably not for the same reasons.

"Do you love me Jane?" He asked randomly. I looked up at him, slowly nodding my head. He nodded his head back, mumbling an incoherent word.

"We should get ready for dinner, dear." He said, walking passed me and towards our room. I waited until he was changed to go in, but when I did, I knew I should have come in sooner.

He was sitting on the bed, waiting for me to walk in, with my note in his hands. My eyes widened and my mouth hung open in shock. He looked up at me, and nodded his head again. It was silent as he just kept nodding his head and puckering his lips.

"This is why I'm giving you the cold shoulder. I can see you added more to it since last night." He informed me, holding it out for me.

"Here, let me read this to you." He said, looking back down at the paper as he took a deep breath.

"Dear Kyle,

What can I say to you right now that will help you understand? First off, allow me to congratulate you, today's the day you will take the throne and replace my father. Do not misunderstand me, but I am running away. Childish I know, I should not dream of asking you to run away with me. Do you want the truth? I'm running away with someone I love.
