As the sun was just barely beginning to rise the group finally came to a stop. My feet were tired, but other then that I just didn't care. It took a moment before I could see what everyone else was doing, and it surprised me. They were getting into cars, about four kids to the car with one or two adults. Everything was loaded into the backs of the vehicles, and people were being hurried into them.
I was ordered into the back with a few others I didn't really pay attention to. I didn't care about anything. I sat in the back, numbly staring in front of me without really focusing on anything.
"If any of you try anything I'll tranq you," one of the guys threatened as he got into the vehicle. I didn't pay attention to him.
At one point a comforting hand went to my shoulder, but I paid it no mind. All I could feel was the numbness creeping over me. Eventually, I leaned my head against the window and let exhaustion take over, drifting off to sleep.
•••
The car hit a bump in the road, jolting me awake as my head hit the window. I opened my eyes, blinking the sleep away. The noon sun was shining through the windows, and the only other person fully awake was the driver. All the event of last night came flooding back to me, and I choked back a sob.
I stared out the window, watching everything pass by, trying to block last night out of my head.
It appeared as if we were driving through the remains of a small town, one that was long deserted. There were many small buildings and overgrown vegetation. I watched the buildings as we passed, which all seemed normal and caused me no fear. Except one.
"We need to get away as fast as we can! That was a hospital we just passed!" I said, urgently.
"Chill your biscuits," one of the guys in front of my replied. "We cleared that place out months ago. Plus, there's plenty of much needed medical supplies in there."
"Dude, nobody says that anymore," the other guy said, now awake.
"Shut up." There was a snort of annoyance. "We're almost there anyways."
"Almost where?" I wanted to know our actual destination, but wouldn't be surprised if the were taking us somewhere to just be rid of us.
"A safe place. And don't worry, it'll be much safer than where y'all have been staying."
I stared out the window, waiting for any sight of our destination. After about five minutes, I saw it. A school that should have been abandoned, but it was the opposite of that. There were cars parked in the front, and people tending to what appeared to be a garden. And all of the cars were pulling into it.
