usually, the school day drags, especially at derry high school.

it was the last day of the school term before summer, and courtney tozier was cramped into a toilet stall with her two best friends, violet thompson and beverly marsh.

beverly placed a lit cigarette between her lips, inhaling deeply before breathing out a cloud of smoke, filling up the stall.

"i hate those things" violet complained, coughing slightly. however, as soon as beverly passed it towards her she grabbed it with no hesitation.

"i hate those things" courntey mocked her. "do you know how bad they are for your lungs?"

"you are such a hypocrite!" beverly laughed.

"don't want to hear it" courtney dismissed her, taking the lit cigarette from violets hand.

"oh my god!" she scoffed. "you little bitch"

"shush" courtney grinned, placing the cigarette between her lips.

"do you know how bad that is for your lungs, courtney?!" beverly mocked her.

"don't quote me" she defended herself. "it's your fault, you were waving it about"

"okay miss social smoker" violet joked, taking back the cigarette before throwing it into the toilet.

"what a waste" beverly spoke, seemingly outraged.

the group began to laugh, however were quickly silenced by the opening of the bathroom door.

"shut up" violet whispered. "it could be a teacher"

courtney grinned at her, amused by her fear of getting into trouble. violet had never had a detention in her life and she was determined to keep it that way.

"are you in there by yourself beaverly?" greta, the school bully, snarled. the three girls looked at each other and rolled their eyes. "or do you have half the boys in the school with you, huh slut?"

"slut?" courtney whispered to herself. "who the fuck does she think she is?"

"i know you're in there, little shit, i can smell you." she started again.

beverly let out a sigh, looking up at her two friends.

"no wonder those little bitches are your only friends, i bet you fuck them too" greta laughed, her friends joining in.

the three girls exchanged a look, trying not to laugh at the remark.

"what is it greta? am i a slut, or a little shit?" bev spoke, awkwardly shifting around on the toilet seat. "make up your mind."

courtney could faintly hear the taps of the bathroom sinks running, a confused expression on her face as she couldn't understand why.

the door of the stall next to them swung open as one of greta's friends walked inside.

courtney quickly ushered for beverly to move off of the toilet seat before climbing onto it and looking over into the stall next to them.

"you're trash," greta spoke. "we just wanted to remind you."

greta's friend was lifting a trash bag above her head, getting ready to pour it into the stall the three girls were in, but she wasn't paying attention.

"boo!" courtney shouted at her, catching her off guard. she lost grip of the bag resulting in the contents spilling all over her.

greta's expression turned sour as she looked into the stall. "you piece of shit, you can't do anything right!" she shouted, storming out of the bathroom with her remaining friends following closely behind.

"holy shit" beverly spoke in shock, violet erupted into a fit of laughter.

"what the fuck just happened?" she exclaimed - unlocking the stall door.

the three girls had said their goodbyes before each making their way home, apart from courtney who had to go meet her brother and his friends.

stanley uris, eddie kaspbrak, bill denbrough, and richie tozier stood outside of the school emptying their backpacks into one of the bins.

"best feeling ever" stan grinned, zipping up his now empty backpack.

"oh yeah?" richie started. "try tickling your pickle for the first time!"

hearing this made courtney eager to turn around and walk away from the group, but eddie had already spotted her.

"hey courtney!" eddie shouted over to her, smiling warmly.

"hey eds" she smiled back, making her way over to the group.

"have you had a nice day?" he asked her, looking up a little as she was taller than him.

"something like that, eds" she replied.

they slowly started walking over to the bike racks where they had left their bikes in the morning.

"you know, the barrens aren't that bad," richie piped up. "who doesn't love splashing around in shitty water?"

before anyone had the chance to reply henry bowers aggressively pulled him backward using the strap of his empty bag. this resulted in richie falling into stan, which knocked him to the ground.

patrick hockstetter smirked down at the boy, eyeing up the kippah that had fallen off of his head.

"nice frisbee, flamer" he laughed as he threw it into the open window of the school bus driving past.

"patrick?" courtney spoke up, catching his attention.

"courtney," he answered as he looked her up and down.

"fuck off" she glared.

"oh yeah?" he got closer to her. "or what princess?"

"yeah, courtney," bowers spoke up. "what are you gonna do?"

the girl turned to face him, flashing him a quick smile. "i'll go to your big scary dad over there, and tell him you hit me" she smiled at him once again. "what do you think he would say about his son hitting a sweet innocent girl? should we go find out?"

henry scowled down at her, glancing over at his father who was giving him a disapproving look.

"this summer is gonna be a wild ride for you, princess" he spat at her.

"looking forward to it" she grinned, making sure to bump his shoulder as she walked past him.
