Erica’s POV
(Flashback)
The coal black storm clouds looked menacing from my seat in first period History. Mr. Peterson, our ancient history teacher, was blabbering on about some war that nobody cared about so I decided to tune him out for a while. I watched as the rain came pounding down in torrents from the sky. The sound of the rain pounding on the roof echoed throughout the quiet classroom. I looked around and noticed that most of my classmates were either a. sleeping or b. texting on their phones beneath their desks while Mr. Peterson stood with his back to the class, oblivious to the students activities as always. I sighed and decided that since I didn’t want to hear Mr. Peterson go on and on about World war 2 that I would resume watching the rain. I turned around in my desk and watched as the rain quickly picked up tempo and turned into hail. The lights started to flicker which captured the attention of the entire class. Mr. Peterson turned around for the first time since class started and looked at us all.
“Nothing to worry about,” Mr. Peterson said as the all the lights went out in the classroom and the room was then swallowed into darkness. I heard a few girls scream and mutter under their breath about some psycho roaming the school looking for innocent victims to kill. I rolled my eyes at how immature some of the girls in my grade could be. I impatiently tapped my foot as we all anxiously waited for the announcement to come telling us that there was a problem with the power system and we could all go home. I heard the crackle of the intercom and the room went deathly quiet as the principal’s voice boomed through the intercom.
“Students and teachers, we have found a problem with the power system and cannot get it fixed until the weekend. You are free to go home and I hope you all have a great weekend. Classes resume on Monday,” He said as the whole class whooped in joy. I slid my phone out of my pocket and sent Sophie a quick text; Power’s out at school. We all get to leave early. Getting ready to come to your house. Don’t think you’re getting off the hook for leaving me all alone at school this morning. See you in an hour. Love you babes. I quickly grabbed my book bag from off of the floor and said goodbye to Mr. Peterson on the way out.
“Bye Mr. Peterson!” I shouted.
“Goodbye Erica, I’ll see you Monday,” he politely responded. I stopped by my locker for a few seconds and piled in all the stuff I needed for the weekend. Once I made sure I had everything I quickly shut my locker, put the lock back on and walked down the dark hallway. It was light even in the hallways to illuminate the way to the front door of the school which was filling up with more and more students by the second. I stepped off to the side and got my umbrella out before I shuffled through the large crowd of people and finally made it outside. It was still hailing and I felt a wave of sympathy at the people without umbrellas. I watched as the hail bounced off of the poor suckers, leaving angry welts wherever they landed. I adjusted my book bag on my shoulder and ran as carefully as I could to my car. Along the way, I slipped on a pile of melting hail and almost fell on my butt but luckily grabbed hold of my car at the last minute. Now that would have been embarrassing, I thought to myself. I patted myself on the back for the nice save and climbed into the driver’s side of my car. I started the engine and placed my hands over the heater. I quickly pulled out of the school parking lot and made my way over to Sophie’s house.

I arrived at Sophie’s about 30 minutes later, due to all the traffic and parked my car in the driveway. I got out of my car and felt the instant need to pee. I wobbled my way up the driveway and didn’t even bother knocking before I let myself inside. Sophie’s house was like my second home and I came over here so often that I didn’t even need to knock. I also had a pile of my stuff stashed upstairs in the guest room. I stepped into the household and noticed that the power was back on. Thank god that announcement came when it did because if they would have waited any longer, I might still be stuck in school for the rest of the day.
