I woke up the next morning with a big, goofy grin on my face until I looked at the calendar on the wall beside my bed and realized it was Monday. I groaned and turned over in my bed, pulling the sheets above my head. If I were president of the United States I would personally ban school on Mondays and save the human race from the horrid day. I was going over my campaign strategy in my head when a knock at my door interrupted my thoughts.

“You awake Sophie?” My mother asked.

“Unfortunately,” I grumbled, loud enough for her to hear through the door.

“Well breakfast is ready and if you don’t want to be late for school you might want to come downstairs and eat,” she said. A moment later I heard her soft footsteps pad away from my door and down the stairs. I sighed and got my lazy butt out of bed. I quickly checked my reflection in the mirror of my vanity and then turned the corner and made my way downstairs to the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen I was hit with the smell of powdered sugar and bread. My mouth started watering as I sat down at the table across from my dad.

“What is that wonderful smell?” I asked as I continued to sniff the air like a dog.

“Beignets,” my mother said as she put a plate of the delicious French pastries in front of me. I grabbed one and quickly stuffed it in my mouth.

“Do you have any table manners?” My mother asked as she looked at me in fake horror. I grabbed another beignet and lifted my pinky finger up before I shoved it into my mouth. My mother sighed and turned away from me but not before I heard her mumble something that sounded a lot like “I hope that’s something she learned from her father and not me.” I laughed as I finished the second and final beignet and put the dirty dish into the sink.

“Trust me honey, I think that’s something she learned at school,” my dad said as he looked up from his newspaper for the first time since I walked into the kitchen. I rolled my eyes and ran up to my room to get dressed for school.

Fifteen minutes later I was ready and waiting for my friend Autumn to come pick me up for school. Autumn was a cheerleader for New Hollow School and was not the typical cheerleader stereotype. She was kind hearted, smart, and a total book worm. She was also very beautiful with her long, brown-blonde hair, sea green eyes, and athletic figure. Autumn and I became good friends this year after Daniel and I started dating and she was also my only ride to school since Erica lived about an hour away from my house.

A few minutes later I spotted her silver Porsche pull into our driveway and I grabbed my backpack from its spot on the floor and said a quick goodbye to my parents.

“Have a good day sweetheart,” my mother said as I quickly waved goodbye and shut the front door.

“Hey Autumn,” I said as I hopped into the passenger seat of her Porsche.

“Good morning Sophie,” she said. “You look nice today.”

I looked down at the outfit I was wearing. I had on a blue, polka dot blouse from Hollister that brought out my blue-grey eyes, destroyed skinny jeans, and a pair of blue Converse. I had also curled my hair that morning so that now my blonde hair fell in cascading curls down my back.

“Thanks so do you,” I said as I smiled at her compliment. Today Autumn was wearing a faded t-shirt and a pair of black sweats. Typical Autumn. Most girls couldn’t pull of the ‘I just woke up and didn’t feel like wearing nice clothes today look’ but with Autumn it just suited her personality and she was one of the few people who could actually pull it off. She gave me a skeptical look and then went back to looking at the road.

“So how are things with you and Matt?” I asked her, remembering a conversation we’d had a few days ago. Autumn and Matt had been the ‘it’ couple at school for as long as I could remember. They had been dating since freshman year and seemed like they were just happy being in each other’s company. But lately Matt had been getting grabby with Autumn and had even asked her to have sex with him a couple times this past week. I looked over at Autumn and noticed the melancholy expression on her face and I knew what she was going to say before she’d even said it.

“We broke up yesterday at the football game,” Autumn said as her eyes started to brim with tears.

“I’m so sorry Autumn, I had no idea, I wouldn’t have asked if I’d….” I said as I was cut off by Autumn.

“It’s ok Sophie, it’s not your fault,” she said.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked her.

“Can we do it someplace private? Not at school though, I don’t want anyone to find out about it until I tell them,” she said.

“How about my place after school today?” I asked her, knowing my parents would still be at work so we’d have the place to ourselves for a couple hours.

“That sounds great,” she said as her mood brightened a little bit.

“Is it ok if Erica comes too?” I asked her even though it was my house.

“Sure, I think if anyone can make me feel better about being single it would be Erica,” Autumn said. I smiled to myself as I thought about what crazy things Erica was going to do or say when she found out Autumn was single again.

“She really is something,” I said as Autumn and I burst into spontaneous laughter. Autumn laughed so hard she lost control of the wheel for a moment and we started to swerve on the road. She quickly snapped out of it and grabbed the wheel, bringing the car back to normal again.

“That was close,” she said.

“Too close,” I said as I started to nod my head, agreeing with Autumn. After the almost accident Autumn and I were quiet the whole ride to school. When we got to school 10 minutes later I got out of the car and waited for Autumn.

“Thanks for the ride, I really appreciate it,” I said to Autumn as she came over to stand next to me.

“No problem Sophie,” she said as we walked into the school arm in arm. As we passed by a few people huddled by the front door I saw some of them look at Autumn as she walked by and then go back to whispering to their friends. By the look on Autumn’s face I could tell she noticed that too. She also had a death grip on my arm which gave away just how nervous she was.

“Don’t worry about it Autumn,” I said, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. I felt her grip on my arm relax and she reluctantly let go.

“I know I shouldn’t be worrying about it, but I just can’t help it,” she said, her vice breaking.

“It’s ok Autumn, I’m right here and I’m not going to go anywhere anytime soon unless you tell me too,” I said, giving her a genuine smile.

“You’re a great friend Sophie,” she said returning my smile.

“Thanks, you are too,” I told her as we approached the junior hallway.

“You ready?” I asked Autumn.

“Let’s just get this over with,” she said as she stood up straight and put on a confident smile. I did the same as Autumn and we linked our arms together as we both strode into the Junior hallway.
