Summary: Jormungand or Jömungandr (Pronounced "Your-min-gone-d" or "Your-min-gone-d-er") is a giant snake from Norse myths, one of the children of Loki and his wife Angrboða.
Behavior and powers: Jormungand spends all its time in the ocean, unable to move. It is so large that it is said it can wrap around Midgard, our world, twice; and then it must bite its own tail to be able to fit around our tiny realm. It has no distinct personality besides pure, boundless rage against the gods. Mostly Odin. Jormungand was thrown into the sea by Odin when he was still tiny, because Odin was afraid he would be a terrible threat to everything that lived when he grew older. When Ragnorok, the end of the Gods (and a killer Marvel movie) rolls around, then Jormungand will break out of the ocean to aid his father in killing the Norse Gods and win his freedom......for five seconds. And then Thor will smack him with his hammer and the snake will die. But the snake's venom is just enough to kill him as he walks a few steps away and then falls to the ground, dead. You win some, you lose some I guess.
Legends: There is one story in which Jormungand is featured that doesn't involve his birth or death.Once, Thor and this friendly Jötun were out ocean fishing when Thor suddenly felt his line hook onto something. It was a tiny jerk on the line, so Thor assumed it was a small fish and pulled. And out came Jormungand. Whoops. Of course with Thor being Thor, he hit the serpent with good ol' Mjölnir and Jormungand fell back into the sea. The lesson of this story is never ever go fishing with Thor, he might start Ragnorok early.
Known weaknesses: Thor apparently.
