Summary: A Church Grim is a guardian spirit, tasked with protecting the church it was "assigned" to. The Grim can be anything, from a human to a pig to even a horse, which is why it isn't exactly pictured. But most famously, the Church Grim is usually depicted as a large black dog.
Purpose and Creation: A Church Grim exists only to protect its church. It is an old Christian belief that the first thing buried in a church's graveyard would have to linger as a spirit and protect the church, but the thought of continuing to force a human to pass up on heaven eventually began to grate on religious folk. So instead, they turned to animals.
An animal was either murdered or buried alive for this, and from then on it was a roaming spirit. The Grim protected the church from any matter of evil, be it witches, thieves, or the Devil himself. It was even known to go against "Year-Walkers", those who attempted a divination ritual to peer into the events of the coming year. A part of this ritual was to circle around a church, which would bring on the anger of the Grim.
If you or someone you know were to enter the church grounds with good intentions, the Grim would happily let you go about your business. However, actually seeing the Grim is supposedly an omen of death, either your own or simply one that is coming soon for another. A long time ago, there was a belief that the Grim took on the appearance of a three-legged lamb to foretell the death of a child.
Weaknesses: There are no recorded weaknesses of the Church Grim. If you've made a Grim angry, you most likely deserve that anger.
