"Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You'll pay me back in time and reap just what sow."
Luke's voice took on a rasp as he strummed quiet, intense, short strokes while I pounded away on the piano, exaggerating the flats and sharps of the key that gave the song its powerful attitude. Then Luke's guitar strumming dropped off so I only played broken chords and sang what would have been the whispered parts in the background of the original song. But Luke and I had tweeked it so it was a noticable moving line and Luke sang around it. I took a deep breath, glancing at the watching eyes of the crowd and squinted against the lights and let the lyrics flow out of my mouth.
"You're gonna wish you never had met me."
"We could have had it all."
"Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep."
"We could have had it all."
"You're gonna wish you never had met me."
"It all, it all, it all."
"Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep."
The guitar picked up and I continued to play the bass clef line that had a steady beat but was a moving line with my left hand and playing the part that corresponded to Luke's vocals. Luke belted out the chorus with even more force than the last two times, and this time, I joined him.
"We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it to the beat."
Luke's strumming picked up and I hit the keys with more precision and deftness, bobbing my head a little, similar to the way Luke rocked back and forth and we tapped our feet against the ground.
"We could have had it all."
"You're gonna wish you never had met me."
"Rolling in the deep."
"Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep."
"You had my heart inside of your hand."
"You're gonna wish you never had met me."
We sang the last part together, but Luke took a medium pitch while I took the high:
"But you played it
You played it
You played it
You played it to the beat."
Luke and I both let our instruments fade out on their own instead of stopping the sound and the crowd cheered. Luke glanced back at me, giving me a big smile and a thumbs up as he stood, setting his guitar on the stand and beckoning me forward. "You did it!"
"I guess I did." I smiled shyly and came to stand next to him as the crowd cheered.
Luke patted my back and spoke to the crowd, thanking them for coming and encouraging them to check out the band. He introduced us once more and bowing to me an incredibly, overdramatic motion, causing the crowd to cheer a little louder before we thanked them again and ran off stage.
