A Ruff Night

I scream out in fright

and climb up a tree,

no one responds,

least none who'll help me.

The snarling and snapping

seems right at my feet,

though I manage, just barely,

to climb out of reach.

I find a safe perch,

skin rough and bloody,

as monstrous creatures

lust after my body.

I'm safe for a bit,

though I seem to be stuck,

my clever escape

turned out to bad luck.

There is no way down,

no escape in sight.

Waiting them out,

the only answer to my plight.

My eyes start to droop

much later that night,

my body exhausted

from terrified flight.

I fight it off hard

and slap my own face,

as flea ridden creatures

laugh at my mistake.

I see it as well

as my mother greets me,

she can't be here,

I must be asleep.

I jolt back awake

as I feel myself fall,

but the branch might as well

be down a long hall.

I hit the ground hard,

both ankles just snap,

the least of my problems,

cause now I'm a snack.

What's attacking him/her?
