Elias's Choice

Elias was a sweet young lad,
though his brain was not too bright.

He did not know the value of pi, though he could tell wrong from right.

He told his mother he'd never steal, he would never take a life.

The worst of all, in mothers eyes,
was the origins of strife.

She made him swear every night
to never hit a girl.

And he believed her when said
that violence would end his world.

It wasn't hard to do as asked,
until that fateful day.

He came across a fair young lass,
her hands deep in the lake.

At first he thought
to approach the girl,
his heart all in a tumble.

But it was only once
that he drew close,
that he saw her swaddled bundle.

He ran to her

and tried to help,
assuming her concern.

But she stopped him cold,
right in his tracks,
with a look of certain scorn.

He could not know her history
or what had brought her here,

but a little life
now ticked away
as he stood and watched her tears.

'Who should I help',
he asked himself
as she pushed it ever deeper.

'The girl, the bundle?
or should I just leave
and get a pizza?'

He punched her face
and snatched the wrap out of the water's depths,

but his scant moment
of hesitance
had bought the bundles death.

Furiously, she ran away
cursing his very name,

but he could hardly look up from
the waterlogged frame.

So was he wrong
or was he right
to hit the silly girl?

His mother,
she would not approve
though she's already left this world.

Elias was not fast enough to
avoid this evil fate,

but if given the choice again
he'd drag the girl into the lake.

What was the bundle?
