Chapter 5

David looked over to Colby who was asleep with his head on the window. He half smiled and kept driving. Soon he pulled over to get some sleep and lay Colby's head down on his lap to get it off the glass. He saw Colby wake up for a second, smile, and go back to sleep. David woke up to the sound of a zed smacking the front of the truck. He backed up and drive around the zed and got on an interstate heading away from Charlotte. Colby woke up crying and sat up on his side of the seat.
"I know, you really liked Hannah. I'm sorry." David said
"Where are we going?" Colby asked
"Somewhere safe." David said
"Where is safe?" Colby asked
"I don't know but you bet your ass I'm gonna find us a place. Somewhere where we can be safe." David said
"There's gotta be a place out here." Colby said
"We need gas." David said
"Next exit has a gas station." Colby said seeing the sign
They got off the exit and stopped at the gas station. Some small one in a small town. Colby got out limping, David walked around the truck.
"I'll find the master switch to get these pumps going." He said
"Wait." Colby said limping to the doors
It was early morning so they still couldn't see in the store. He walked over to the glass and tapped his gun on it. Three zeds ran into the window, Colby drew them to the door where they were trying to push it open but Colby held it shut. "Ready when you are." David said
Colby opened the door and the three zeds walked out past him. David backed up drawing the zeds further out, Colby limped up behind the last zed and stabbed it in the head. David killed the other two with his knife. They walked into the store and Colby grabbed a basket.
"You go find the master switch I'm gonna grab us some food and water." Colby said
David nodded and started to walk away but turned back around.
"Colby?" He asked
"Yeah?" Colby said
"Be careful." David said
"Same to you." Colby said
Colby looked around the store and found that it had been mostly untouched. He grabbed food and water, found some small things of medicine, and found some travel hygiene stuff. David walked behind the desk up front and saw the cashier who had been shot in the head.
"Jesus." He whispered to himself
He looked up and saw the cash register was opened and empty. He then grabbed the handle for the back office door, he opened the door and walked in and a zed came from somewhere next to him pushing him on the ground. He held it back with one hand and pulled his knife out with the other. He used all his force to hold it back yelling. Colby came running in and kicked the zombie in the head causing it to fall to the side of David dead. Colby dropped down to his knees
"Are you okay!" Colby asked frantically
"Its not my time. Not yet." David said laying on the ground catching his breath. David looked over and saw the keys for the lock on the master switch in the zeds pocket. They walked outside and David started pumping gas into the truck Colby sat on a bench next to the truck and thought back on all they had lost. He started crying and after David got done with the gas he sat down next to him.
"I'm sorry." David said
"We've lost so much these few months. Mom, Skylar, Hannah, and Devin." Colby said crying
Colby leaned his head on David's shoulder, David put his arm around Colby.
"I know." David said his eyes starting to tear up
"Why is it that they didn't get a chance in this world like we did?" Colby asked
"If it wasn't for them we might not have made it to where we are. If Hannah didn't fall, those zeds would've gotten to you when you hurt your ankle, and....I don't know if I would've be able to live with myself after that." David said
They sat together on the bench for probably twenty minutes.
"We need to get going, maybe find a place before nightfall." David said
They both got in the truck and David drove back up to the interstate. They drove for a while and Colby was looking out the window. He saw something with balloons on it with zeds surrounding it.
"Stop." Colby said
David stopped the truck and Colby opened the door.
"What are you doing?" David asked
Colby ignored him and yelled at the zeds to get their attention. There was seven of them that turned and started coming toward him. He used his bat and killed about four of them. But he dropped it and the zeds were coming at him. He started limping backward and then he heard three gunshots and the zeds were dead. He turned around and gave David a nod, he then walked over to the sign with the balloons and wiped the blood off of it.
"Mount Airy Safe Zone. Open to all who want to survive." The sign said
David walked over and stood next to Colby
"No shit." David said
