Marinette Dupain-Cheng wakes up! She hears the tears as her parents cry in the other room. She thinks, what could have taken place to make them sad? She senses something is amiss, but what? She goes downstairs and sees Alya's mother and father there. She can tell they are sad too.
"What is it? Why is everyone sad?" Seventeen year old Marinette asks.
"Should we tell her, or she we let you tell her?" Tom Dupain-Cheng, Marinette's father says.
"I will tell her, after all I am her best friend's father," Mr. Cesaire says.
"Tell me what?" Marinette says.
"I am sorry, Marinette!" Mr. Cesaire says.
"Sorry? why?" Marinette says.
"Oh, sweetie, our daughter is gone!" Mrs. Cesaire says gently through her tears.
"Gone? what are you not telling me?" Marinette says.
"Marinette, our darling, Alya is dead! She drowned!" Mr. Cesaire says.
"What? Drowned? No, Alya is just fine," Marinette says.
"Mom, Dad, tell them! Tell them Alya is on her way to meet up with me for school like she always does," Marinette protest.
"I am afraid we can't do that, Marinette." Tom says.
"Your father is right, Marinette." Sabine says.
"No! Alya! No! She is my best friend!" Marinette screams.
"We know how much you cared about your friend," Sabine begins.
"I don't get it, how can she be dead? She was just fine yesterday!" Marinette says as she sobs.
" I am sorry, but it is true. Our daughter, and your best friend was found dead in the ravine this morning. Roger found her during his morning rounds, and..." Mrs. Cesaire cries.
"My best friend, is -is dead?" Marinette asks. It was really more of a response of shock than a question.
Mr. Cesaire just nods his head and hugs Marinette. She sobs against his jacket.
Then, she goes over and gives Alya's mother a hug as well.
Marinette thinks, today was supposed to be the best day of my life, but turned out to be the worst day ever! Today, I lost my best friend! Nothing, will be the same again.
Later, that weekend, Marinette gets ready for her friends funeral. She cries the entire way there. She sobs throughout the whole service. She can't help, but think that everyone sure had some nice things to say about Alya. She watches as Nino, Alya's boyfriend, steps forward with tears in his eyes as he places a daisy on Alya's casket. This sweet gesture towards her friends memory makes her cry even more. Daisies as anyone that knew Alya well, were Alya's favorites. After the service comes to an end, Marinette hugs Nino. She figures why not? He is kinda like the brother she never had and besides, he and Marinette both miss Alya something awful!
"Thanks, Marinette," Nino says sadly.
"Sure, anything for my friend," Marinette says sadly.
Marinette thinks, where are you Adrien, when we need you? Why are you away when Alya is dead as a door nail? Why could you not be here for Nino if not for me? He is your best friend for goodness sake.
