I pulled back and stood up, totally freaking out.

"What is wrong with you? You can't just treat me like shit for years, then waltz in here and kiss me!"

He moved back and frowned at me. "You let me kiss you. You even kissed back."

I sighed. "You're right. I'm sorry. It's just... It's hard to believe that you're done with all that bad stuff. I still don't quite trust you."

"I understand why you feel that way and I can totally respect that. What can I do to help you?" he said with compassion and sincerity.

"Hm.... I have to take care of my baby cousin tonight. My aunt, uncle, and parents are going on a double date. I could use some help, if you don't have plans," I answered, then added, "babies have a good sense for character, so if you really have changed, then... Darcy will let you hold her. She's really friendly, but she can tell."

"What time should I come over?" was how he chose to respond.

. . . . .

The baby arrived already asleep and my parents and aunt and uncle all left the house. Funny Man showed up about 10 minutes after.

The 6 month old baby girl named Darcy was fast asleep in her play-pen and I was watching TV. I let Funny Man in and he settled on the couch beside me.

"I'm going to boil some water. Would you like some tea or hot chocolate?"

"Yes please. Tea is fine. Thank you."

I got up, filled the kettle with water, and put it on the warming burner to heat up. After, I set our two mugs out with tea bags. Settling back down next to Funny Man, I paused the TV and looked at him.

"Why?" I suddenly demanded.

"Why what?" he asked, looking confused.

"Why did you bully me? Why did you apologize? Why are you trying to make it up to me now? Why are you helping me?"

"I-I... I'm different now. I'm not the same person I used to be. I had a dream and I knew I had to make amends with you. That's the best way I can explain it."

"Why did you bully me?"

"I don't know. I was awful. It was awful for you. I'm different now. I promise."

The tea kettle began to whistle and I glared at him before getting up and pouring the water into mugs with the tea bags. I handed one to him and sat again, sipping from the steaming cup. Just then the baby started crying. I sighed, set my tea on the coffee table, and picked her up. She leaned her head on my chest and wailed louder.

"Get one of her bottles from the fridge, please," I half asked, half ordered.

He quickly brought me a bottle with a pink ring holding the nipple to the bottle and keeping the milk from spilling out. I sat on the chair near the play-pen, took the bottle, and held it to the baby's mouth. She refused it and continued to wail. I handed the bottle back and asked Funny Man to grab one of her toys from the diaper bag. Low and behold, the over-sized, pastel colored keys did nothing to calm her. I checked her diaper, but she was dry and comfortable. I stood and rocked and bounced her to no avail. She went from wailing to full on screaming as loud as her little lungs could possibly manage.

It was almost half an hour of the relentless screaming and I was starting to get stressed as I tried harder and harder to calm her. I was starting to get frustrated, then.... I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Let me hold her," Funny Man said.

I hesitated at first, but I gently laid Darcy into Funny Man's waiting arms. She opened her dark eyes and stared at him for a second before beginning to fuss again.

"Now, now. Why are you crying, dear? There's no need for that," he cooed. She quieted down a bit. "My name is Dylan and I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you some cool stories if you stop fussing." Her face relaxed and she quieted, her eyes opening wide to stare up at him in curiosity.

"Once upon a time, on the lonely streets of Sunset, 5 crazy MCs gathered. They heard that a beach party had super lame music and were going to rescue all the party goers from the awful DJ. J-Dog, Charlie Scene, Johnny 3 Tears, Da Kurlzz, and Danny started to get into Charlie's mom's Station Wagon when some goof named Funny Man came running down the street, yelling, 'yo, you forgot the homie Funny Man!'. They waited until he hopped in, then drove off to rescue the party. They got there, kicked the DJ off his set and took over. They spat lightning fast rhymes and sung and jammed out for hours. They got girls and made friends and drank apple juice from fancy bottles and breathed in leaf fire. They danced and had fun and saved everyone from having a terrible time at the party. They were the beach heroes." Darcy smiled up at him sleepily and closed her eyes. Softly, he said to her, "good night, sleep tight, don't let the dead bite, little one." She fell asleep in his arms, still smiling. He was smiling down at her too.

I took a few steps and stood next to him, leaning my head on his shoulder. He really has changed. He's so sweet and caring and gentle. He glanced at me in surprise, but didn't say anything. It was as if he knew that once he said something, the magic of the moment would shatter and I'd be frustrated with him again. My arm moved around his waist and held his body to mine, then the other one splayed over his stomach. My body shifted slightly and I was hugging him from behind, with my head resting on top of his shoulder. I felt him shift slightly and he gently pressed his body into mine a bit more.

. . . . .

Darcy was sound asleep in her play-pen and I sat next to Funny Man on the couch again. He looked at me and smiled a bit. I opted to break the silence first.

"I didn't know you were good with babies."

"I didn't either, but you needed help, so..."

I smiled at him. "You're a big softie. I see right through you."

"I am not," he said, grinning.

"Yes you are, but you don't want anyone to know." I accentuate the second you with a poke to his chest.

"I'm not and we both know it," he said, his smile audible in his voice.

I leaned in and kissed him. Once. Twice. Three times before checking the time.

"You better get going. Everyone's going to be home soon."

He kissed me one more time then stood.

"I'll see you at school," he said and gave me one more kiss before walking out the door and quietly closing it behind him.

I sat there, staring at the door, wishing for more.
