“Hey! Skylar Grace Nagani, you let go of your sister’s hair right this instant!” Saki shouted, running to the girl and removing her talons from poor Eve’s head.
The pair looked up at her with bright eyes. Eve’s lip quivered, as if she would cry, and Skylar had a small smirk on her face. The two girls were identical, with dark hair, light eyes, and upturned noses, but their personalities differed so drastically that Saki wondered how they were related.
Angela screamed from the other room that Colin needed food, and Saki tugged the girls by their hands to the table, where she managed to place them both into high chairs they had almost outgrown. She slid bowls of noodles to them, and brushed the hair from her face as she swooped into where Angela dwelled and grabbed Colin. She plopped him in a chair as well, setting a bowl before him.
Saki liked to think of herself as superwoman when it came to parenting, and, if she did say so herself, she was doing a pretty damn good job at it.
Angela flew in on her broom and landed successfully on the floor, swinging into her chair next to Saki’s. The older woman frowned, staring at the witch. “Haven’t we talked about this?” she asked. “You do realize you were right next door and didn’t need to fly, correct?”
“I know,” Angela said, “it’s just more fun this way.”
“Oh, of course,” Saki agreed sarcastically, rolling her eyes. The five chowed down on their noodles as a knocking resounded off the walls.
“I’ll get it,” Saki announced, pushing herself up. Skylar had dumped the entirety of her dinner on her head and as Saki went to answer the door, she yelled at Angela to clean it up.
Asher’s face appeared from behind the oak, grinning. Saki smiled and threw her arms around his neck. “Thank God,” she gushed, “you, sir, are my saving grace.”
“Wait,” he said, sniffing the air, “did you feed them noodles again?”
She flushed. “But they love it!”
Her Weapon snorted. “That doesn’t mean they won’t cause you the trouble of cleaning it all up.”
“Please, they’ll make a mess of anything. Including my closet, or bedroom, or hair. Even my bookshelf! Ruined!”
Asher followed her into the kitchen, and four small brunette heads turned to see him. “Uncle Ashee!” Skylar yelped.
“Hello, dear," Asher greeted. Skylar held up her pasta-covered fingers, an indicator she wished to be picked up.
“Resist her cuteness,” Saki warned, “you’ll ruin your shirt if you carry her.”
“But look at that face! Those eyes, dear god the eyes,” he smirked at his Meister, who saw that he held a small child in his arms. “No one can resist the eyes.”
“Put her down, Tyson,” she chided, “she hasn’t eaten her dinner!”
“Dear god, now it’s on me,” Asher said, gagging.
Saki groaned. “Did she throw up on you again?”
“She thinks I’m for target practice! Let me tell you kid, I am no bullseye.”
Colin began to screech at the table as Saki took Skylar from Asher’s arms and made her way to the boy. She grabbed him too, and the three made their way back to their bright green bedroom. Saki set Sky on the floor and she plopped down, seemingly content. The Meister quickly did a diaper switcharoo with Colin and dragged a struggling Skylar to the bathroom to get cleaned up.
Of course, the night had only just begun.
At eleven o’clock that night, after the kids had gone to sleep a mere forty minutes earlier, Angela walked in, pulling three groggy toddlers.
Skylar licked her lips. “I tired, Momma.”
“Angie…” Colin whispered, pulling her nightgown, “take me back to sleep.”
The witch ignored them, striding to Saki.
“The kids had a nightmare,” she said, but Saki knew better. “Can we all sleep with you tonight, Mom?”
“Of course,” Saki said, opening her arms. Angela climbed in first, attaching herself tightly to the only mother she had ever known, and the triplets followed suit.
The family’s breaths fell into a consistent pattern as they drifted off to sleep, and, for once, Angela nor Saki cringed at nightmares that felt all too real.
