“Where are you dragging me?” Mifune groaned, as he sat, pouting, in the passenger seat of Saki’s car. She had gotten permission from Lord Death to leave school early, and the kids were elsewhere.
“Fine, then,” Saki said. “I’ll just turn around, and we don’t have to find out the gender of our child. That’s okay with me!”
He shut his trap. “Continue driving,” he then added, smiling, “and, faster, please.”
Now it was the third time she’d seen her husband cry.
The nurse squirted the weird-smelling blue goop onto her swollen stomach, and Saki was painfully aware of Mifune’s grip on her hand. In fact, all she felt was him, and, well, in a less romantic way, the freezing gunk on her abdomen.
The nurse, a willowy woman with blonde hair and shocking eyes, stated that their baby was perfectly healthy, and that everything was going as according to plan. Nothing was wrong. “Would you like to find out the sex?” she asked.
“Yes,” Mifune immediately answered for Saki, sounding beyond eager.
“Well,” the lady waved the technological wand around a bit more, and grinned. “It looks like you’re going to have a beautiful baby boy.”
In the weeks that passed, Mifune probably looked up more baby names than Saki had in choosing them for three kids.
“I want it to be perfect,” he said. “I won’t forgive myself if he hates the name.”
Then, when Saki thought she’d have to wait until she actually gave birth to hear the name, her husband walked into where the family sat, beaming. “I have an announcement."
Eve looked up, cocking her head. “About what?”
“The baby,” he responded.
“You mean the one in Mommy’s tummy?” she asked.
“Yes, that one,” he said patiently.
The girl nodded, her suspicions confirmed.
Then, the entire crowd looked to the samurai with eager ears, Saki only guessing what he could say. Mifne cleared his throat, blushing scarlett. “I’ve found a name. It’s James. James Nagani. I figured you could pick the middle name, dear.”
Saki smiled from ear to ear, her insides fluttering.
It was perfect. The name was perfect.
For once, everything in her life was clicking into place, and she wouldn’t let anyone change that.
Not if she had a say in any of it.
