And now you wish that you meant something.
And now you wish that you meant something to somebody else.
And now you wish that you met someone.
And now you wish that you meant something to somebody else.
Something to somebody else.
My phone rang at around seven, scaring me half to death. It had been awhile since I had gotten any calls. Everyone either hated me or didn't have my number since I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. It was just getting to be a little - well - much back at Baker. I answered my phone to hear slight panting.
"Umm.... Hello?"
"Oh yes hello! Is this.... Kiya Thompson?" asked a kind of sad, almost hollow female voice.
"Yes."
"Great! I was calling about the babysitting ad you put in the newspaper."
"Oh do you need my help?" I asked, even though it was obvious.
"Yes umm, do you think you could help out tonight? The child's father got a surprise call from work and I'm just his receptionist. I can't really take care of her while he's gone."
"Of course I can help! I just need the address."
"Right, it's 6069 Buckcherry Lane. Do you need directions?" she asked blandly. She sounded like she hated the thought of life.
"Actually I don't. I live just down the street from there. When do you need me?"
"ASAP."
"Okay I'll be there in ten minutes..?"
"Okay, thank you."
I hung up, slightly excited. This was the first call I had received about my ad. I loved kids, and I had a babysitting certificate, and this was the only way I could make it by on my own. I quickly got redressed in one of my black Escape The Fate t-shirts and my favorite skinny jeans, which had a hole in the left knee from a powersliding accident. I slipped on my ever present black, blue, and pink Airwalks and I was ready to go. I also slipped on my purple Roxy hoodie.
As I pulled up to the address, I was absolutely awestruck. I'd seen this place before. But no, it couldn't be, could it? No. Nope it was impossible. There was no way. I came out of my stupor and approached the door, knocking on it slightly. It was immediately opened, as if the person was just staring at the door waiting. I took in the man standing in the doorway and almost died. I was dreaming. That was the only possible way this could be happening.
"Hello, you're Kiya right?" the wonderful man asked.
"Hi yeah I'm her. You're Craig Mabbitt right?" I was amazed at how steady my voice was. It wasn't matching the rest of me. I could feel my entire body trembling.
"Haha, yeah I am. Here come inside, Leila is really excited to meet you." he said and smiled warmly. I swear my heart came up into my mouth, onto the floor and just melted.
I walked into the living room behind Craig, and saw the cutest little girl I'd ever seen. She was sitting on the floor in her blue and yellow duck footsie pajamas and watching Batman. As soon as she saw me, she got up and ran over.
"Kai, Kai, Kai!" shouted Leila as she ran over and hugged my legs. She looked up at me and smiled, showing most of her teeth. I smiled back down at the adorable young girl.
"Oh good, she likes you already! She figured out your name when Diane called you. She's quite the little eavesdropper," said Craig, ruffling her hair. "I've gotta go back to the studio for some last minute work on our new record. Oh! I'm in a ban-"
