Nurmengard Castle, Austrian Alps, 1927.

A towering, dark building sat on the cliff's edge in a secret location in the Austrian Alps. It's gloomy presence was shadowed by dark clouds that boomed above, threatening to pour with every second that passed.

Inside the heavily-walled fortress was Gellert Grindelwald, along with his newly recruited 'members'. A Legilimens and an Obscurial, who Gellert believed would make great additions to his growing army.

They all sat in a large room with a library on one wall, filled with reading and spell books. On the far side of the room sat a wide window, overlooking the cliff of the intimidating mountain. In the centre was a low coffee table, surrounded by mahogany furniture with velvet cushions, navy in colour.

Gellert sat with one leg crossed over the other, stirring his tea with the tip of his finger using non-verbal magic with a book open in his other hand. Queenie Goldstein sat opposite, sipping her coffee quietly. She could feel an uncomfortable atmosphere, and the silence was nearly unbearable. She was so used to hearing stranger's thoughts all the time in busy New York that this was a big change, but maybe it would become a welcome one.

Credence stood at the bottom of one of the many bookshelves, reading the spines of each book, waiting for something to catch his eye. He had been standing there for a ten minutes, unsuccessful.

"Aurelius pick one and sit down." Grindelwald finally broke the silence, impatience laced in his tone and a short temper was obviously evident. He looked behind him where he could see the dark haired boy's shoulders tense and he slowly slid a book out.

"I don't like that name..." Queenie heard the boy's voice and looked up suddenly, waiting for Gellert to answer with an irritated remark or insult.

But she was puzzled when nothing followed, and the boy's face read that of confusion. He sat down on the farthest side of the couch from Gellert, knees held tightly together as he hunched over the book.

"Can you hear me?" He repeated in his head, looking up from his book about magical creatures to the woman opposite him.

She made eye contact in acknowledgment, but immediately cast her eyes down when she saw Grindelwald was staring between them. He looked back down to his book and cleared his throat.

Credence shuffled uncomfortably on the couch, flipping a page in the book. "Why are you here? What has he promised you?" Credence's thoughts were very clear, and Queenie was unsure of how to answer.

She lifted herself from the couch, gaining only Credence's attention as she walked to the bookshelf, which stretched upwards to the high ceiling. She began to read the names of the books she saw. "Hairy snout, human heart," she spoke silently that only Gellert and Credence could hear a muffled mumble. "Men who love dragons too much," She said the word love slightly louder than the other words. "The adventures of martin miggs, the mad muggle." She picked up the first one she had read out, about how Werewolves shouldn't be treated any differently.

Credence flipped another page of his book before watching her return to the couch in front of him. "Love muggle? He promised that you can love a no-maj?"

Queenie slowly nodded her head, as if she was loosening the tension in her neck. She looked to Gellert but all she saw was a bolt of white light hit the coffee table. It exploded into splinters of wood and shards of glass.

Queenie gasped and Credence flinched, pulling the book towards his chest and tilting his head away form the damage as his timid eyes fell on Grindelwald.

The dark wizard stood tall, wand being moved to his side as he let out a sigh. A smug expression appearing on his face. He ran a hand through his platinum hair, tutting and shaking his head. "Should I be questioning your loyalty?" He looked to Queenie, waiting for an answer but was left in silence.

She didn't dare make eye contact, but instead wondered if he should be questioning her loyalty. She didn't know why she decided to join him, he has obviously proven he can be manipulative.

"No." She answered after a minutes wait, her voice lost of her usual bubbly attitude and full of energy tone.

"Do not make me regret my decision." His voice was strong and his gaze sent shivers up Queenie's spine. His mismatched orbs didn't leave her shrinking form.

She nodded her head, eyes locked on the floor. "Now, I will be in my study, knock if you need anything." His whole demeanour had changed in a matter of minutes, and he strode out of the room, humming to an unknown tune.

Queenie was taken aback, as was Credence. They were now unsure if they had made the right choice, but since both of them thought they had little alternative, they felt as if they were forced into it.

Queenie had little support from the man she loved, and Gellert's offer of allegiance in her time of weakness was just too good to be true. He promised her something that she wanted to hear, needed to hear. She cursed herself for being so foolish as to fall for his tricks, his mind games. He only wanted her for her unique capabilities, nothing more and nothing less. But now she had seen his true colours, his paranoia that everyone was disloyal. Even before that burst of anger she had seen signs of him questioning them. The locks on their bedrooms every night, a curfew starting at 11pm and being forbidden to leave, which he said was so no one knew where they were.

She let out a conflicted sigh, leaning back on her chair as her book fell to her lap. Tears threatened to spill from her eyes as she rubbed her face with the palms of her hands. She longed to have Jacob sitting beside her, reassuring her that everything was going to be alright. To even say that he loved her would mean the world to her at the moment. She felt lost and isolated, not knowing where she was supposed to be or who's side she was on.
