Éponine's heart stopped, "How-how did you get this number" she stuttered.

She heard him laugh, "Oh Éponine I have my ways and you friend is too attentive during class. Why are you doing this? Why did you get a new number?" He asked forcefully.

"I-uh I" she paused and took a deep breath, "Marius I think we need to break up. This relationship isn't healthy and-and I have feelings for someone else" she said. She felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders until she heard Marius.

"Is this for real" she could hear the smirk in his voice, "Is he in the room and making you break up with me again?" He asked.

"Marius I'm serious. Please leave me alone" she said going to hang up the phone but Marius called out.

"No don't you dare. What you didn't have the decency to do it in person. I had to find your new number and call you? Wow Éponine some girlfriend you are. Where are you? You're not in class today" he said.

"I'm not going to tell you that, you don't need to know" she said.

She heard Marius scoff, "Right. I'm your boyfriend I deserve to know" he said.

Éponine was furious, "You're not my boyfriend and in fact I'd be ecstatic if I never saw you again. Good bye Marius" she said.

"Don't you dare hang up on me you-" he began but Éponine ended the conversation and threw her phone in her backpack.

She felt tears come to her eyes. She didn't feel safe in this office anymore. The walls felt like they were closing in and she pulled her legs up to her chest.

Suddenly she heard the doorknob jiggle. Someone was coming in. She placed her head on her knees and waited for the blows to come, but instead she was met with a gentle hand on her shoulder. She looked up and saw her principal. He saw the distress in her eyes, "Éponine what happened?" He asked.

"He found my new number and called me. I told him I never wanted to see him again and he became furious. I don't know what to do anymore. I thought I made the right choice to tell him to stay away but now I'm not so sure" she said helplessly.

The principal kept his hand on her shoulder. "You made the right decision. Do you want me to call him down here and-".

"No please don't. I don't want to see him" she said.

He nodded , "Okay. Is there anything I can get you?" He asked.

She shook her head. "No, thank you though" she said. He nodded once before leaving the room.

Éponine was alone again and let the tears fall from her eyes. Why couldn't this have happened to someone else? Why her. Did she have something to prove, did she do something wrong, did the universe want to see her suffer? She didn't know but she was fed up with it. She just prayed the day would end quickly so she could get far away from everything at least for a little while.
