Ding dong. That's the third time now. I rap my knuckles against the wooden door again, they're going numb from the brisk night air. Ding dong. Fourth. Suddenly there's a shuffling and a muffled 'coming', the door creates clicks almost rhythmically as it finally swings open to reveal a brunette. He runs his fingers through his short locks, pushing it to the left, with his other arm draping over his helmet.
"Sorry I'm late, I had quite a giant issue. But you know me, I managed to shrink it down and deal with it." He says with a wink, I roll my eyes and wrap my arms around him.
"Merry Christmas goofball." He plants a kiss atop my (H/C) wind-induced bird's nest before resting his chin on me and pulling me closer with his free arm. After a few moments I rustle the bag in my hand and he tenses up, I lift my gaze to meet his emerald one and see that he is practically about to explode with excitement. 'For me?' he mimes, only a squeak coming out; I nod and he lobs the helmet across the floor, carrying me through his house in a flurry before placing me down on the floor - the entire time I'm in fits of giggles. A quick scan of the room reveals Scott's best friend Luis, his colleagues Dave and Kurt, an old guy, a woman with a pony tail, Scott's parents and-"Oh my god, Cassie! You've grown so much since I've last seen you! C'mere ya little munchkin." she bounds up to me and throws herself into my open arms, we topple to the floor in peels of laughter and just remain there in a tight embrace.
"(Y/N)! Mummy said I can stay with daddy for Christmas so she can spend time with Jim!" I look over at Scott to see him close to tears and a huge grin plastered on his face, the relationship with Maggie has been pretty rough - it must mean a lot to him for her to be allowed here, "Come on, come on. Come on," she almost dislocates my arm after jumping to her feet as she drags me away, "Santas been, I wanna show you what he got me!" she giggles and as I'm whisked away I look over my shoulder.
"Hey guys, I'll chat later." Luis nods and chuckles at Cassie's antics . . . antics . . . dear lord I've spent too much time around Lang.

An hour or so passes as Cassie shows to me and explains every gift she received, from the pack of candy canes to the princess-themed ant farm ("I'm the ant queen and daddy is my eternal slave." she states matter-of-factly, I shake my head and and laugh nervously that's a bit dark for a kid her age) - eventually leading to Luis poking his head through the door.
"We have a bit of a-uh, problem." He stammers, I follow him to the living room with Cassie clinging to my leg like a chimpanzee. He slowly pushes open the door to reveal absolute chaos, the tree is rustling with baubles clinking as they fall off and roll across the carpet. I place my bag of gifts on the floor next to me.
"What happened here?" I ask Luis timidly, half expecting him to go on a ten minute reel of explaining what happened.
"So basically, right, I went to this woman a few miles north of here and she was like," here we go, "'oh my god, you don't have a tree!?' and I was like 'no, I need a really good one like for my mate Scott' and she was like 'yo, pick it up tomorrow'. So I drive over there in the van, you know the van? The X-Con Security one? It's actually a pretty funny story on how we got it, it started with-"
"Luis, the tree. Get back to the tree."
"Yeahyeahyeah. Right, so I drive over there in the van and when I pull up this pretty blonde is there and she's like 'yo, I got you a tree, you good fam' and we tie it to the roof, then I'm on my way back but, uh oh, road works. I take a left and go through this like real scary forest place with loads of trees and stuff ya'know?"
"Yes, there tends to be trees in a forest Luis."
"Yeahyeahyeah. Right, so I'm going through this real scary forest and I'm like 'I'm gonna die here' so like I speed up and then BANG! Sommat lands on my roof so I'm like 'yo I ain't checking that out, this tree is for Scott so he's gonna deal with that'. So I get back and put the tree up, we decorate it all pretty 'n' stuff and it looks like my ma's tree. Her tree is real pretty, it has loads of lights and tinsel and baubles - there's this one bauble that I got her a few years back where she was like-"
"Luis, tree."
"Yeahyeahyeah. So I help Scott decorate the tree and Cassie is all like 'yoooo, this hella dope', and then Scott's pops is all like 'nah fam, this ain't the one' but I ignore him 'cause like I ain't going back in that creepy forest man. So you get here and you're all like 'yo Cassie, whattup fam' and you go, when you left we were all chillin' and then BANG! I remember the thing that landed on the van in the forest, I go to Scott and I'm like 'yo man, there's like totally a demon in your tree dude' and he's like 'fo' real?' and I'm like 'yeah man'. So he goes over to the tree and a squirrel fires out and is like attacking him, then it jumps off and runs around for a bit. I go to get you and I'm like 'yo we have a problem' and that brings us to now."
"You could've just said there's a squirrel in the tree." I sigh, chuckling to myself - he stares at the ground and strokes his chin thoughtfully.
"I guess you're right man." Then I walk in and cautiously approach the tree. I grab a handful of nuts from a nearby bowl on a table and try to coax the squirrel out.
"Hey, hey, hey. Don't panic little buddy, I'm here. I won't hurt you, come get this tasty food." I whisper; the rustling stops and a little nose sticks out, twitching and sniffling. Slowly the squirrel emerges from the tree and places a hesitant paw on my hand, it glances up at me before snatching a nut and nibbling on it. I motion for Scott to come over, he approaches with a box and I tip the contents of my hand into the box; the squirrel hops in and I quickly snap the flaps shut, successfully trapping the creature.

Later on, once I had gifted Scott his pink bunny slippers which he loved and he hasn't taken off yet, we all gather around the table and are ready for the Christmas turkey to be brought out. I have learnt that the two newcomers are Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyke, the guy who created Scott's suit and Scott's work partner 'The Wasp'. Ant-Man and The Wasp . . . sounds like a superhero film. Hope talks quite fondly about Scott, I get an awful feeling in my stomach that something is wrong but due to not knowing what it is I just brush it off and continue talking with her; she tells stories of them working together and how he is a great person, I get slightly protective but I push it off as me being melodramatic. A few minutes pass and I turn my head towards the kitchen, Scott shouldn't be taking this long - all he has to do is put the turkey on the tray. I excuse myself from the table and enter the kitchen, smoke is pouring out of the oven and covers everything below the hip.
"Babe?" I call out. Nothing, "Scott, is everything okay?" Still no response. I go to check on the turkey but I stumble back at the whoosh of a flame erupting from the oven, the smoke alarm starts screeching and I can hear the shunt of chairs as everyone exits the house. I start to get worried, "Scott!?" I cry out, dipping past the flame, "Babe if you can hear me please say something."
"(Y-Y/N)." I hear him weakly croak, I run towards the noise to find him sprawled across the floor with blood dripping from his nose.
"Scott!" I fall to my knees and cup his face with my hands.
"W-What happened? Why are you he-" he breaks out into a fit of coughs, I hook my arms under his and support his head. The smoke rises above my head.
"C'mon, lets get you out of here." I pull my top up over my nose and mouth before dragging him out of the house through the back door, as I exit I hear the distant wail of fire engines. Once we're a safe distance away I pull him onto my lap, resting his head on my shoulder, "What happened to you?" I question, concern laced in my voice as I stroke a few strands of hair out of his eyes.
"Hope. Sh-she's jealous." He splutters, I rub his back signalling for him to take his time, "She's jealous of us, o-of you . . . She said if she c-can't have me then no one can. That I'd regret ch-choosing you over her . . . A sharp pain and then . . . I collapsed . . . I think she hit me."
"And whilst you were unconscious the turkey started to burn, eventually setting on fire and ruining your Christmas. Not only almost killing you but putting Cassie in danger in an attempt to ruin your life as Maggie would not be happy." He nods before wheezing again, he must've inhaled a lot of smoke before I got there.
"Will not be happy, what am I gonna say to her? Sorry, I almost got our daughter killed." he burrows his head into my neck and I feel the warm wetness of fresh tears, I pull his crumpled form closer into my chest, "I wanted this to be perfect, give Cassie the perfect Christmas. Instead it's been a disaster." He murmurs. Cassie runs over as I stroke her father's hair.
"What's wrong with daddy?"
"He's upset, thinks he ruined your Christmas." she gasps.
"Are you kidding!? Daddy this has been the bestest Christmas ever!" she exclaims, he tilts his head to watch her, "I got to play with uncle Luis who has really funny stories and I get to see (Y/N) and Mr Pym, who's grumpy but he's a good hugger." A small smile appears on Scott's face, "Don't be sad daddy, I had a really good Christmas. And Santa brought me the bestest presents like the-" and as she rattles off all her different presents and why they're all the 'bestest', she sits on Scott's lap. I wrap my arms tightly around both of them and gently press a kiss to Scott's lips, "-and then there's the doll from grandpa and I love it's long red hair and how she-"
"I'd say that's a pretty successful Christmas, wouldn't you?" I mutter into his ear, he nods contently as we both watch Cassie in her animated descriptions.

Luis, Kurt and Dave march over and they tower over us, hands on hips.
"Hey man, that's not cool. Having a family moment without your bros, what's this about?" Luis complains, throwing his hands in the air.
"Well come here then." I motion towards us, sat on the grass. The lads dive on top in a group hug and we all just sit there as a family under the moonlight, the firemen dousing the housing in water. Who needs parents disapproving your tree and jealous ex girlfriends when you can have a group of airhead 'grown-ups' and a little girl who all love and respect each other.
