All the children have gone home leaving me to run my fingers through (H/C) hair, whistling a random tune; we had used a lot of glitter today as sadly I'm leaving tomorrow. The kids had all worked together to make me a thank you card - the crafty sods distracted me with a small group who constantly 'needed help' to achieve this undercover mission. Once I'm sure that a good majority of the rainbow sparkles are out, I begin to gather up the few remaining supplies and pack them away into a small satchel. A quiet knock on the table makes me jump out of my skin - it really shook me up I thought I was the last one here. The familiar pair of dark eyes, that I now notice are subtly flecked with green, twinkle in the fire from nearby torches being lit for the night.
"Knock knock." he smiles, entering the gazebo.
"Who's there?" I decide to continue the little joke.
"Someone who wants to." go on a date? Because I know I want to.
"Someone who wants to what?"
"Someone who wants to show you something." he says, a light pink tinting his cheeks and in his eyes . . . regret? Is he holding something back? "What do you say?" he mumbles, I nod and grin.
"I'd love that." his face lights up like a young lad on Christmas morning and we set off to my hut; I need to ditch my equipment before going anywhere. Last time we talked was when I first met him, he was very closed off and secretive; I don't blame him, we had just met that day. I dump my satchel behind the chair and then he grabs my hand - taking off running. I let out a laugh at the childish behaviour which leads to our conjoint cackles carrying on the wind.He takes me up onto the rooftops and we jump across the closely knitted concrete blocks, I still have no idea where we're going but do I care? Hell no! I'm just loving spending time with Bruce. After the short parkour session we end up on a gravely roof covered with pillows and surrounded by unlit candles, he wanders over and produces a lighter to ignite the candles - which I find out are vanilla scented. He gestures for me to sit down and I look out over the twinkling town, a low hum rumbling through the village; hoards of bustling mothers running to gather food and the wasted youth playing tag through the crowded streets. The auburn moon casts a glowing path down the centre of the distant rippling ocean, I mentally capture this gorgeous image forever locking it in my mind for safekeeping; it's beauty brings tears to my eyes.
"Oh God, are you okay? Should I go? I'm so sorry, I shouldn't be here; I've ruined everyth-" he starts to fret so I push a finger to his lips effectively silencing the rambles.
"You haven't ruined anything Bruce, please stay?" I beg with a small smile.
"Okay." he mumbles against my finger, I envelope him in a hug before dropping onto the make-shift seating, he gracefully joins and hesitantly puts his hand near mine - I place it on top of his and intertwine our fingers.
Even though his cheeks are burning a lovely crimson hue, he manages to pluck up the courage to place his arm around my waist and pull me into his side. I sigh contently, resting my head on his shoulder - this causes his stiff body to loosen up and relax.
"Its just beautiful, isn't it?" I hum in response, "I come here to relax and calm down . . . there's something I've been wanting to tell you but . . ." he trails off wait, is he crying?
"But what?" my voice is soft, I don't want to pressure him.
"I don't want you to get hurt, I-I'm uh, g-growing pretty fond of you. Even if we've only known each other for a few d-days." he chokes out, I grab his free hand and squeeze it in his lap.
"I have to tell you something too: I'm leaving tomorrow, back to New York." he nods thoughtfully, a flash of courage pushes him to spill the beans.
"(Y/N), there's a monster inside of me." he blurts out, I take a moment to process it before he explains in detail about the gamma radiation experiments and being on the run.
"Well, if you're ever in New York take this." and I hand him a pre-written scrap of paper with my new address and mobile number on - the apartment is in a lovely little area right down the road from the infamous Stark Tower."So you're not afraid of me?"
"Of course not, I've loved tonight and I hope I can have your company again sometime in the near future." We both sit in a comfortable silence, making the most of what we think are our last hours together - little do we know a red-haired assassin is lying in wait to visit Bruce. Little do we know that our paths are destined to cross again so soon.
