Chapter 3
The Sorting
As we waited to be led into the Great Hall, Cass and Jackie had started up another conversation about America which Spencer soon joined in on, while I moved further into the crowd as a boy with platinum blonde hair called out. " It's true then, what they're saying on the train. Harry Potter, has come to Hogwarts." Everyone began to whisper amongst themselves, and I rolled my eyes. I knew this boy, Draco Malfoy, the son of the man I had seen talking with my mum at the Leaky Cauldron. He started being really rude to one of the red heads I had seen on the platform, and I glared at him. This was none of my business, but there really was no need for his attitude.
" You'll soon find out why some wizarding families are better then others, Potter, and you don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort. " He said casting a look toward the red head before holding out his hand." I can help you there." He told him. Harry took one look at his hand responded. " I think I can tell the wrong sort for myself, thanks."
'Real smooth' I thought with a smirk as I then turned and went back over to Jackie, Cass, And Spencer just in time to see Spencer run a hand through his hair. He was trying to imitate Malfoy's slicked back hairdo, but ended up looking more like the American comic book Villain, Joker, leaving Cass, Jackie, and I to all burst into a fit of giggles.
The professor in green returned to lead us into the Great Hall, and our eyes widened at the sight before us, thousands of candles filled the ceiling which seemed to open to the night sky. Four tables were lined out before us with one large table for the professors at the end. We were led between the two the tables in the middle to a stool which held a large brown hat. This was it, the sorting, the moment I had waited my whole life for. " When I call your name, you'll come forth and I shall place the sorting hat on your head, and sort you into your house." She called out before unrolling the list and reading aloud. " Brooks, Cassiel."
Cass made her way toward the stool and the moment the hat touched her head, it came alive. It wasn't even a moment later that it called out for everyone to hear. " SLYTHERIN."
Cass shrugged as she approached the emerald clad table, before taking a seat at the end of it as everyone there shouted out there glee. Next was a girl named Hermione Granger, a girl with bushy brown hair, who became a Gryffindor. " Levi, Spencer."
Spencer's appearance changed rapidly as he made his way over to her and several whispers filled the great hall. The hat had barely touched his head before it called out. " SLYTHERIN." There were no cheers, but the whispers grew louder as he approached the table and sat down beside Cass. Next was Malfoy, who became a Slytherin.
" McNeil, Jackie."
Jackie swallowed back a gulp, before stumbling over and sitting down on the stool. The hat was silent for several minutes, before it finally made it's decision. " HUFFLEPUFF" Jackie glanced toward me before looking toward Cass and Spencer with a sad look. She walked defeated toward the Hufflepuff table, before sitting down next to Susan Bones who had also been placed in Hufflepuff.
" Potter, Harry." She called and everyone went quiet as he approached the stool with a look of terror on his face. He and the hat seemed to have a conversation before it decided to place him in Gryffindor. My heart raced as she got closer and closer to my name, and I began to silently panic before I remembered my mum's words from several days ago. " Riddle, Emrys."
I walked over to sit down and the professor in green seemed to stare at me with an emotion I couldn't decipher. Was it fear, shock, surprise, or was I just seeing things. The hat was placed on my head and immediately I heard it let out a sigh. " Well now. Another Riddle, nothing like your father I see, but still as ambitious. I see that you also have his mind, but...that doesn't matter, not when you yourself have already chosen. You and your friends will be great, yes indeed. I wish you luck, Emrys." The hat told me before calling out for everyone to hear. " SLYTHERIN."
Cheers filled the air as the hat was pulled from head, and I went over to sit next to Spencer and Cass. I put on a smile for my new friends, but I was still mentally wondering if this was where I wanted to be.
