Chapter 8

Detention Bites

" I can't believe you got us detention." I grumbled as Cass and I followed Filtch, Harry, Ron Hermione, and Malfoy toward Hagrid's hut. " Lighten up, Riddle, we're going into the forest." Cass grinned. " Wait until Jackie hears about this."

Cass had dragged me out of bed to go and chase after Malfoy, we had of course gotten caught by Filtch. When we reached Hagrid's hut, Hagrid stood outside waiting for us. He was sniffling as he loaded his crossbow. " A dragon." Cass said wide eyed when it was mentioned and I rolled my eyes. One thing I had learned in the short time that I knew Cass, she was obsessed with dragons.

Hagrid led us into the forest and after a while of walking, I glanced back with a frown. " Something wrong?" Hermione asked looking over and I shook my head. I could have swore...

Hagrid leaned down to look at something on the ground and my eyes widened. " Unicorns?" I asked and he nodded. " Aye, I found one dead a few weeks ago. This one's been hurt bad by something. So, our job is ter go find." He explained and I glanced around with a frown. Something didn't feel right, and I didn't like it. " Ron, Hermione, Cass, you'll come with me. Harry, you go with Malfoy and Emrys."

" Okay, but I get Fang." Malfoy said

" Fine. Just so you know, he's a coward." Hagraid and I snickered at the look on Malfoy's face before reaching over and petting the large dog as he whimpered. " Come on, Fang." I told the dog before I walked off in the direction that Hagrid told us to go. Malfoy started complain about them sending us out here and I shared a look with Harry. We stopped when we reached a clearing, to find a cloaked figure feeding on the body of a dead unicorn. Draco let out a scream as it raised it's head before taking off running with Fang not far behind him.

I pulled my wand in defense and stepped in front of Harry, though I wasn't quite sure what I planning to do against this thing. It floated toward us and I heard Harry hit the ground behind me as he fell, while the thing rose up to stand on two feet. " B...back off." I warned the creature as it got closer. " I. said. BACK OFF." I screamed and the creature was thrown back. The creature started toward us again, but stopped when a large man with the legs of a horse appeared to chase him off.

********

I was sitting with Jackie, Spencer, and Cass, trying to enjoy the day when Harry, Ron and Hermione came over to us. " Emrys, can I talk to you?" Harry asked.

" I'm sitting right here." I said without looking up from writing my letter home. " Alone?"

" Whatever you have to say, you can say in front of my friends." I told him

" Alright. How did you throw that creature by yelling at it?" I paused in my writing before putting away my quill and getting up. " Come here." I said grabbing his arm and pulling him away, leaving my friends to share a look. Once we were far enough away from the others, I turned on him. " What do you want?"

" I want to know how you did what you did. It obviously wasn't normal magic."

" No, it isn't." I admitted looking away before let out a breath. " I want to tell you, Harry, I really do, but I don't think you'll understand." I whispered. I wanted to be his friend, not someone he might hate, or be afraid of. I wanted him to understand, and I wasn't ready to tell someone, not yet. " I'm...different. " I admitted. " I can do things others can't and I prefer not use that power, unless absolutely necessary."

" But why? Where does it come from?" My father

" I'll tell you, just not today, please."

" When your ready then." He suggested, seeing how uncomfortable it made me, and I nodded. " Thank you, Harry."
