"Thanks for the ride Mr. Briney!" Viata waves at the old man from the dock. The wooden dock stands firm against the crashing tides. Magikarp poke their heads above the surface and their yellow crowns break the water. Splashes of ocean water spray salt into the air. Viata takes a deep breath in and smells and tastes the sea air. She walks down the wooden stairs toward the beach but stops. She looks at her feet and sighs. Sand fills her shoes as she walks across the sand. "Stupid shoes. Stupid beach."

She stands in front of the Dewford Gym and walks in.

Viata calls out Thyme as she empties her shoes of sand, "Time to shine with those new wings of yours."

"Dust!"

Multiple confusions and gusts later result in the final confrontation.

Viata enters the gym leader's room and says, "I challenge you to a battle!"

A middle-aged man turns around at the other end of the room. He places two dumbbells down with a grunt. Sweat glistens off of his face. "Challenge accepted. Go Machop!"

"Go Thyme!"

Thyme gusts onto the field and launches a confusion at Machop. The Machop endures the hit and retaliates with a karate chop. Thyme takes the hit but loses altitude from the strength. Thyme recovers and launches another confusion that knocks out the Machop.

"Return Machop. Go Makuhita!"

Makuhita stumbles into the area as Thyme launches another confusion. Makuhita reels from the super-effective hit. The Makuhita recovers from the psychic blow and connects a force palm. Thyme flies into it and releases a confusion. Makuhita barely hangs on and launches another force palm. Thyme takes the blow and discharges a final confusion that fells Makuhita.

"Return Makuhita." The gym leader walks toward Viata. "That was an overwhelming show of power. You deserve this badge."

Viata glows with pride. "I couldn't have done it without my Pokemon."

All her Pokemon appear from their Pokeballs and tackle Viata in a hug that sends them crashing to the floor. Viata wriggles under the Pokepile.

"C'mon you guys! Let me breathe!"

Laughter fills the inside of the gym.

Viata exits the gym back onto the sandy shore. She plods through the sand and battles a few trainers to Granite Cave. She clutches a letter in her hand. Viata dumps her shoes of sand at the entrance. Other piles signal the presence of other trainers and people in the cave. She grips Lionheart's Pokeball as she ventures into the depths of the cave. The walls guide Viata as she feels along them to find her way through the cave. She didn't want to teach the move, Flash, to any of her Pokemon. At last Viata and the team reach the end of the cave where a smartly dressed gray haired young man stands in front of a mural. He introduces himself as Steven and tells Viata about the mural. But she already knows the story by heart. She nods along to his tale and when he ends, she hands over the letter. In appreciation, Steven gives her the TM, Steel Wing.

Viata exits the cave with a trail of fainted Zubats and geodudes behind her. She sighs as she walks along the sandy beach again. Her shoes fill up with sand.

She reaches the docks and as she empties her shoes of sand Mr. Briney approaches her.

"Ready to go to Slateport?"

She taps her shoe to get rid of any lingering crumbs. "Let me dump my shoes out first."

Viata finishes dumping out her shoes and boards Mr. Briney's boat.

"Full speed ahead to Slateport!"

A couple of days later they reach Slateport. A massive beach rests in front of Slateport crawling with Trainers. After she beats all the Trainers, she wanders into the Seashore House and battles some more. The owner of the Seashore House awards her with Soda Pops for showing him exciting battles.
