I kept running, not stopping to catch my breath even though my lungs were screaming for me to. My feet were moving forward automatically, preferring the exhaustion over the immense grief that would come without the physical movement.
The hidden passage was old and dirty, covered in spider webs and insects. This made me thankful for the surge of adrenaline, without it I would not be able to keep my vomit in. My feet were killing me after only a few minutes of running, but the image of what could happen if I got caught, kept me going.
Clarissa had been killed, trying to protect me. The guilt only grew each passing minute, making my eyes water. I furiously wiped them away, I could not let Clarissa's death go to waste.
The next few minutes seem to go by impossibly slow when all of a sudden I spotted a flash of light at the end of the passage. I could've cried out in joy had I not been scared of getting caught.
I cautiously walked to the end, trying to listen for any signs of human life. After declaring it safe, just to calm my growing nerves, I walked outside. Not before grabbing my gun.
I shakily undid the safety and pointed it forward, ready to fire at any danger. My hands trembled, partially because of the cold, but partially because I was scared. If the rebels killed an innocent maid in cold-blood, what would they do to me? The beloved daughter of the king and queen, who slept safe and sound with a full-stomach while the rest of the kingdom was falling apart and children were going to bed hungry and cold?
Once outside, I quickly adjusted my eyes to the bright sunlight trying to detect any danger. I let out a relieved sigh when everything seemed clear. The passage had actually led me to the back of the castle, providing me a safe passage into the woods. Well, as safe as the woods can be.
The woods were considered highly dangerous, at least for runaway princesses.
Not wasting another second, I wandered into the woods. The tall trees covered in snow were giving me somewhat of a shelter, which I was very thankful for.
I felt the freezing snowflakes settling on my skin, making me shiver. I tried getting some body heat by rubbing my hands down my arms but the cold still seeped through.
With all that was going on, I didn't stop to realise I was outside. I was finally in the woods, which I had fantasised about numerous times from my chamber in the castle. I looked back at the castle, my window looked miniscule from where I was standing. The castle looked perfect from the outside, but I knew the dark secrets it held on the inside.
This should have been one of my happiest moments but too much was sacrificed for this to happen, for me to be free. A cost freedom was not worth. I wish I could have taken everything back, I would have gladly spend the rest of my life in a cell if Clarissa would still be fine and breathing.
Pushing the thoughts away, I continued searching for a safe place through the woods. I was walking along a small lake when I suddenly heard the sounds of hooves hitting the ground. The sounds were heading this way. I panicked searching frantically for a place to hide, but I had no luck.
The sounds were getting closer and I knew I had no chance of escaping if I tried to run. Fortunately, an idea sprang to my mind and I quickly ran to the biggest tree I could find and started climbing it. My hands quickly started freezing and my feet kept gliding away but I pushed through, not ready to give up.
When I was high enough I stopped climbing and carefully looked down. Almost as quickly I looked up, trying to keep my vomit at bay.
Oh God, I sure would die if I fell.
From this height I could still make out some voices, the men looked to be armoured and dangerously scary. They were gathered in a circle with a single soldier, I guess their commander, in the middle. He looked ready to kill.
"Everyone split up and search through the woods. No one goes home till we have found the princess! She will pay for what she has done! You two stay here and keep watch. Everyone else search through the woods, go through villages, do what you have to do to find her! If anyone gatherers any useful information, report back here." The scary guy yelled, then he proceeded to hand out pictures of her to soldiers before commencing the hunt for me .
How was I supposed to get out of this one?
oh oh she's in a lot of trouble, I don't even know how she's going to get out of this one!
Please let me know what you thought of this chapter and vote if you like it, it would mean the world to me!
I'll be trying to get my chapters to be a minimum of 1000 words. Hopefully with the story getting more interesting, I'll be able to reach that goal.
Merry Christmass btw!
