Hartley's P.O.V
I sat across from Richie, my left hand slightly around my cup of tea feeling the warmness seep into my fingers and my right hand was holding a certain letter, this letter would literally tell me how I should continue on with my life. Richie had the same letter in his palm as he held it with shaky fingers.
We met up at a cafe about five miles down my house, we had met up for a reason and that was to open our acceptance or non acceptance letter from the universities that we had applied to. Richie was nervous I could tell, his fingers were shaking, his knees were shaking.
I? I had another reaction, I was sitting across from him, probably the most calmest expression I've ever had as I ran my thumb over the envelope lightly.
"W--why aren't you freaking out about this Hart?" Richie asks me and I look into his eyes before sighing and looking back out the window, I wanted to tell him the truth--I wanted to tell him that I wasn't freaking out because even if I got in, I wouldn't be able to go--I wouldn't be able to leave her, but instead I answered with,
"I am freaking out Rich, but on the inside" I tell him trying to be convincing and it seemed that it had worked because he seemed to calm down a bit. I clear my throat and let go of my cup of tea before moving forwards,
"are you ready?" I ask him and he takes in a deep breath before nodding, I knew this meant a lot to Richie, it meant alot to him because finally he'll be away from his overbearing cruel father. He gives me a shaky nod and I look to the right of him seeing as the waitress was coming over to deliver our breakfast so I spoke up again,
"Once she drops off our plates, we immediately open our letters" I tell him and he look behind him and then nods again, holding the letter with two palms now, his pointer finger around the clasp that would open the envelope.
We both waited as the waitress came over, dropping off two main meal plates filled with breakfast food and as soon as she walked away we both equally started opening our letters and reading them.
As soon as I opened up the letter and unfolded it, I skipped the introductions and went straight to were it said "we accept" or maybe, "congratulations, we offer you blah blah blah". Or it could go another way, like basically start the letter off like this, "thank you for applying bu--"
"I got in!" Richie's loud voice yells through out the rest of the cafe which made me flinch back a few staring at him softly but smiles wide and reaches over practically taking him in my arms.
We stayed in that position for another minute and after we had noticed weird stares around the cafe, I wanted to point to Richie and make a loco sign with my finger but held it in as I sat back down in my seat, watching as he had the biggest smile on his face. But then he had reached over and I saw he was reaching for my letter, I quickly pulled my letter away and he had a frown on his face.
"Oh come on Hart, did you get in or what?" he asks me and I stared at him for a few seconds before looking down at my food and wordlessly begin cutting my chicken and waffles.
"No--no I didn't get in Rich" were my words, more or so were my lies before I had cut up a piece of waffle and stuck it in my mouth. Richie stayed quiet for a few minutes and I look up at him to see him looking at me sad like.
I sigh and shook my head at him, "don't look at me like that Rich. It's fine okay? look I've been thinking of doing something with racing anyways" I tell him and it seemed to lessen his sadness but he had still looked upset that I didn't get in.
I hated lying to him but--I couldn't tell him the real reason--as I've mentioned before that--I couldn't leave her, even if she hated me right now and didn't want to speak to me. I couldn't leave her. I had also started working on a green house near the house, their were going to be ladders on each side of the green house, it'll be filled with different colored roses. Ma would have loved that.
