The air around me felt distinctly different. The sweet smell of lavendar was gone and replaced it was a musty stench of despair. Even though things looked pretty dire for them, Matthias was optimistic. “Well there's no use crying about it. We can only rebuild.” Matthias let out a chuckle, “Those fools didn’t even steal my crops or check the barn! If they really wanted to ruin me they would have done that.” Elizabeth stood up “Oh please how can you be laughing at a time like this! Look what they did to you!” I stood there thinking about what to say, it seemed inappropriate  to ask for directions to Caern right now. I had no choice if I stayed here longer I would be putting them in even more danger. “I know this isn't a great time but I have to leave, it's my fault you've gotten in this mess, they were looking for me, I'm sorry.” Eliza turned red from rage but quickly dispelled as it seems she didn't have anything left. “I knew it! I knew it from the start! Your a no good wretch! I should've killed you from the start! Now were ruined you damn fool! “Elizabeth stop.” Matthias stood up shakily. “I'm the reason they did this not John, he had nothing to do with it.” Elizabeth stopped herself from crying, she glared at me and left the room. Matthias threw his hands up, “I'm sorry about this John but things just haven't been the same with her since her mother died.” I stared down at my boots too ashamed to say anything. “I need to go Matthias, thank you for everything you've done. I dont deserve it, I'm a bad man.” “No your not, well at least not as bad as those scoundrels that came here. I would be running too.”  Matthias I need one last favor from you, ok trying to get to Caern some friends of mine are there. Do you know how to get there. I got lost in that infernal storm last night and lost my sense of direction.” Matthias looked confused then his face twisted with laughter. “My boy you are in Caern! To think you didnt know! Hahaha” I stood there stunned what that can't be Caern is a giant city, this cant be Caern. “You must be joking…” Matthias put his hand on my shoulder “I'm afraid this is the humble town of Caern, well most of the town is a little bit north from here.” “Thank you, well I better be going.” “Wait right now?” Mathias said with suprise. “It's dark out how will you even see?” I turned to face him. “It's safer to travel during the night plus I know where to go now.” Matthias went to the back room and came back with a leather satchel bag. “Here take this it's not much but it should help you get to Caern safely. It's about an hour journey to get there.” for the first time in a while I cracked a smile “Thank you.” I headed out and begin walking on the dirt road. I traveled north as Matthias said too. For some unknown reason I trusted him, after all he did save my life.Without his medicine the wound would've became infected. I whispered the spell for fire as it grew in my hand. It wasn't much but at least I could see better. The dusty path shown under the white pristine moonlight. The country side of Caern was bathed in it. The fields of wheat and corn were all around me. It would be almost impossible to hide around here. You could almost see for miles as the land was so flat. Insects buzzed during the whole night of travel, reminding me of home when the cicadas would chirp in the trees. I didn't have a home anymore, those days were long gone. It was almost if they were someone's else memories engraved in my head. They seemed so foreign now. To think I once had parents and a peaceful life. I wished for those days again. My still festering wound ached through every step, why can't I just stay out of trouble for once and not get injured. So much for knowing magic I thought. It only ever brought me pain. What seemed like hours went by. The smell of wheat couldn't lift my spirits, the flame in my hand began to slowly die out. Almost all my energy was depleted. I though I would never get there but I saw multiple lights up ahead . That must be it. I quickened my pace to an almost run. The lights grew brighter and brighter and stone houses came into view.
