The box had enough room for a few people to sit in comfortably. It was ten feet long, ten feet wide, and ten feet tall. All sides were congruent. That was why I called it the box.
I found the box when I was younger. My mother told me of the monsters under my bed so I ran to the laundry room because my mom said it was the safety zone from monsters.
I had been foolish to believe something as ridiculous as monsters. That day I had felt something, but I couldn’t quite give it a name.
I didn’t like the feeling.
My thoughts came to a cease as I grabbed my book I sat in one of the corners of the box. I only sat on the girl’s side of the box.
I looked at the other side of the box. There was an opening.
One time I had crawled through it and looked through the vent. It led to the male’s laundry room. It had surprised me that I was the only person to find refuge in the box.
If anyone found it they couldn’t tell anyone. They would know a room like the box was a secret. It wouldn’t be hidden if it wasn’t a secret.
I opened my book and read my favorite line.
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet.
The meaning was hidden. I knew that, but I had never heard of a rose before.
The book I took had the cover scratched off and it was stamped unapproved. They were supposed to destroy the book. That’s why I took it. To save it. It was my favorite. I deserved it for following all of the rules.
I shut my book and looked around the box. It was dark, but lit by a small light that never went out. I was amazed of the brightness and life of the small light. I couldn’t see how it had lasted that long.
I had never replaced it. It was a very reliable light unless my box wasn’t a secret.
Every time I visited the box I always questioned if other people had found it. My bookmark had at times moved, but I might’ve moved it on my own without remembering.
At times my book moved a few inches, but maybe I kicked it on my way out. It had never shifted to the other side or anything big.
That I knew of my box was a secret, and that was all that mattered. I had a sanctuary.
I had my own prudent inside of Prudent.
My eyes closed and I yawned. I was tired. Quickly I left the box. I scooted my way through the vent and looked through the opening. There was no one on either side.
I had to check. My secret couldn’t be discovered.
Quickly I opened the vent and climbed out. I put the cover back on the vent and then left the laundry room. I walked down the Bedroom Hall until I found my room and then opened the door. My mom and grandma were ready for bed.
I grabbed the clothes that sat on my freshly made bed and walked to the bathroom. My body was shutting down, but I had to change first.
I put the clothes I would wear tomorrow on and then left the bathroom.
My grandma sat on the edge of my bed. I walked to my bed and sat beside her.
“My ninetieth birthday is in two days you know,” My grandma told me. She stared at the wall.
