“You mean the outside?” I asked Nicki, but I knew she most likely wouldn’t be the one to respond.
“Yes the outside,” The lady who stood at the screen said. “I forgot you haven’t seen it. Would you like to?”
“That’s for another day,” Nicki piped up quickly as she gave the lady a glare.
“Right,” The lady said as she peered at me, “Another day.” Then she went back to explaining what the meeting was called for. “There are more barracks, and people. We think they are preparing for something, but we can’t tell for sure. If it’s what I think then we are all in danger.”
I didn’t pay attention to what she said, except the last part; it it’s what I think then we are all in danger. What did she mean by that? How could we have been in danger?
They knew something I didn’t, and I wanted to know what it was. I knew if I asked Nicki she wouldn’t tell me, at least not yet; she needed to trust me more.
I needed to get closer to her, so she could trust me; with all of the secrets; I knew she had to tell me eventually. Her plan was to leave Prudent in my hands someday, so I had to know; I thought so at least.
“I propose we strike before they do,” The lady said as she stared into Nicki’s gaze; I could feel the tension.
There was something about the way Nicki looked at her; it was like Nicki didn’t like her, but why would she be such an important lady if Nicki didn’t like her. Then again I was there, and Nicki at one point didn’t like me.
“That won’t be necessary,” Nicki said as she stood up and approached the computer screen; she touched the x button on it and the moving picture of people disappeared.
“But,” The lady tried to say.
“But nothing,” Nicki said cutting her off. “It’s not safe and you know it.”
“Ok then,” The lady said as she glanced at all of us until her eyes fell on me; she stared at me and then left the room without a word.
“That concludes our meeting,” Nicki said; then everyone but me stood up and scattered away in all directions entering different doors. I stood up and turned back to the door I had come from. “Not you.”
I knew she spoke to me, so I turned back around and stood still.
“What’s for today?” I asked her as I took a deep breath; I couldn’t imagine what her next move was with me. There was so much to know, and I knew that then, unlike before.
“I need you to follow me,” She said as she walked to the door that led to the room we were in the day before.
I followed her without a word; she opened the door and held it for me. She led me to the computer we were at the day before; then she moved one over, and she sat down. Then she looked at me and waited.
I sat down after I realized she wanted me to sit; then she looked at the screen, and I did too.
The screen had many more icons than the last one had; too many to count at a first glance, and I wanted to know what all of them contained.
Nicki clicked on an icon and words popped up; the first words were:
What is God?
The next group of words contained the following:
God is our creator, or so they say. Our ruler and the only one we should worship. The word has been studied and there is not a single fault in the entire whole. There has never been a religion without a fault. It is written that “Jesus died for our sins, and upon that the price of sin is death.” Eventually all of us will die and that is correct, but did Jesus really die for our sins? Or is he just another false God to ease the thought of death.
