Part 1 Chapter 11

Mare

   Waking up my head felt as if someone had split it apart and roughly forced it back together. Looking at my surrounding, I saw that I was in the Infirmary, laying on a soft bed. There was a silver nurse looking at some kind of notes. As I turned my head a little more, I see a sleeping Maven sitting on a seat. He looked so troubled in his sleep, his brows furrowed into a scowl, and I could see little wrinkles, no doubt caused by stress. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him in that moment. For a second I could forget all that I have been through and what was to come. I shivered at the thought. I thought crossed my mind suddenly, but it was impossible to ignore. What I'd I ran away. Escaped? I shook the thought off, knowing very well how impossible that was. Even if I managed to make it off the castle grounds, Elara wouldn't stop until she found her, or even worse, they would kill her on sight. As I tried to quietly make my way off of the bed to make back to the safety of my room, if you can even call it safe, Maven stirred in his sleep and slowly opened his eyes. "Mare?", he asked, still groggy.
"Uh, I was just heading back to my room", I responded a little too quickly. He raises an eyebrow at me quizzically.
"Well you seem to be in quite the hurry. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to sneak out of here." He almost seemed to smirk at me as he said that. Sneaking out of this room was the least of my problems. Cal's trial was in 2 days. Wait..., I remember, that was what I heard right before I passed out. This is all the more reason why I need to get out of here, and quick. I almost laugh as I ponder about escaping. Not about how impossible it is, but because just a few months ago, I would have loved to have money and luxury, to have all the food I could want, and now all I want is to get back to what I already had. I wouldn't have Maven though. I shook off the thought as quickly as it came, and left the infirmary without another word. As I looked around, I didn't see many guards patrolling the halls, so I quickly jogged to the corner of the cross-section and looked to make sure the coast was clear. When I saw the only guard turn the corner, I dashed in the direction of what I thought was my room. Thankfully I made it back down the familiar halls to my room, but before I could get inside, a warm hand grabbed my wrist. I helped and spun around to see Maven smirking as he held my wrist tightly. I gave him a glare and tried to pull away, but he held onto my arm tightly. "Where are you going in such a rush?", he asked calmly. I looked at him with an annoyed expression on my face.
"To my room?", I half said, half asked, hoping he would let me go.
"You could have asked me to take you, I would have gladly escorted you, but instead I was talking to you, you didn't answer, and ran down the halls." I looked away as I tried to think of something to say back.
"I just want to be alone right now," I mumbled softly. "And I don't need you following me when I'm just trying to get a little space." He let go of my arm suddenly, smirking even more than before.
"Well don't forget about lunch in 2 hours, you wouldn't want to be late." He then kissed me on the cheek quickly, and walked off. I stood there a second, bewildered by Maven's strange behaviour. All I knew was that the longer I stayed here, the more of myself I was going to lose.
