Part 1 Chapter 1

Mare

     The diamond glass walls of the palace seem blinding today as Lucas guides me to my room. The sun had just started setting over what I can make out of the Stilts. "My lady, you seem rather distracted this evening. Is there anything wrong?", Lucas askes.
    "Just admiring the sunset,"  I lie. I wish I could enjoy the its beauty, but the parting ball plagues my mind. Soon I will have to leave my family behind, and I never got to join the Scarlet Guard. Cal had ushered me to the bike before I got a chance. I had agreed worried we would be found out by the queen. As we approached my room the other guards flanked off, leaving me and Lucas alone.
   "I can take it from here Lucas," a familiar voice states. Maven. I turn around as Lucas bows and see freezing blue eyes. Blues that could also melt your soul or freeze your heart. As Lucas walks away Maven gives me a nice half smile. "So, I can see you are a little nervous about the ball." He takes a deep breath and then adds, "If you would like, I could teach you a few steps." His words make my face get hot but I already know my answer.
   "Sure, but when will we do it?", I ask already blushing.
   "I'll come get you at around 10:15 when everyone else will be asleep," he says sweetly. He kisses my hand and then walks down the hall leaving me blushing. As I hustle into my room, I have a little tinge of excitement at what Maven said.

   The night passes by slowly as I wait for 10:15 to come, and after dinner I start to feel anxious. What will he think about how badly I dance? I laugh yo myself at this. It's funny how a few weeks ago I had to worry about conscription and if we would have food or if I would be caught stealing, and now my biggest worry is if I will learn how to dance properly without sticking out. As I get in bed and ponder about what how my life has changed, I hear a polite knock on my door. I quickly tip to of my bed and quietly open the door, and am met with blue eyes with a small smile to match. When I look at him, he blushes slightly and sticks out his arm with an encouraging smile.
