Even though they already did it, the initiates had to go through their fear landscape again for the Dauntless leaders. Not to mention the fact that the person who watched their first attempt was now dead.
Since they had already experienced their far landscape, the Dauntless leaders decided to have an extra screen that would show the rest of the faction what he initiates were seeing. This was a year for experimenting.
They were going in order of their current rankings, from best to worst. So naturally, Four went first.
Four walked into the fear landscape room and stood with the five leaders.
"Okay," Max started, "We are going to inject you with this serum and you will go through your fear landscape. Luckily, you only have four fears so it shouldn't be too bad, eh?" The leaders chuckled a little.
Four just gave a grim smile and tilted his head so one of the leaders could inject it into him. The entire Dauntless compound was watching, wanting to see what his four fears were.
In front of Four, the scene changed. He was standing at the edge of a really tall building and the wind was pushing him forwards. He was struggling to move backwards, but it wasn't working. He just kept moving forwards. He glanced down and then immediately back up again. He looked down again, steeled his nerves, and jumped.
He crashed into the ground and it went dark. He looked around and suddenly a wall crashed into his back. He started pushing on it and reached his other arm out to hold off the other wall which was also coming closer. All for walls were squishing him in and now the ceiling was coming down too. His heart rate was rising, it was getting hard to breathe.
Four closed his eyes and took deep breaths. In. Out. In. Out. Soon his heart rate was down and he had moved on to the next obstacle.
There was a gun on the table and an innocent child, around eleven tied up in a chair. He picked up the gun and looked at her. She looked terrified, there was a single tear running down her cheek. He aimed the gun at her, and fired.
Suddenly, he was back in his Abnegation home. With it's bleak grey walls and it's plain set up. The exact same as any other Abnegation house. He heard a noise in the corner and turned to face it. Marcus.
With endless black pits as eyes and dragging a belt on the floor. The belt was covered in spikes. "Tobias." He said. Four took a step away from him with fear in his eyes. "Tobias." He turned. There was another Marcus standing behind him. He looked around. He was surrounded by Marcuses. "Tobias." They repeated all at the exact same time. "This is for your own good."
They raised the belt behind their shoulders and brought it down upon him. Hard. They kept doing it. Four was now curled up in a ball on the ground, covering the back of his head. He suddenly had an idea. He reached his right hand towards the ground and picked up a knife that wasn't there a second before.
He looked at it and then dove onto the nearest Marcus. Stabbing him repeatedly. Finally, he lay still. Four stood up. The simulation was now over. He took a shaky breath and buried his face in his hands.
The Dauntless leaders came into the room. "You alright?" Max asked tentatively.
Four nodded, bringing his face out of his hands. "Fine."
"You can go out and watch the others now." Max told him.
Four nodded and walked out through the door he entered from. He was met by staring faces and silence. He walked to an empty table and sat down. Zeke came over and sat with him. "Hey."
"Hi." Four attempted a smile. He then turned to where the rest of dauntless was staring at him and rose an eyebrow. They turned away and their conversations started up again.
"That was a pretty nasty fear." Zeke said awkwardly.
"Yeah." Four laughed grimly. "And now everyone knows that my father's a bastard."
Zeke smiled. "Want to go get some cake?" He still had two or three people until his turn, so they had time.
"I would love to get some cake." Four smiled back, he was so glad that he had a friend like Zeke.
The two friends went up to the food table and got themselves some Dauntless cake.
"Thanks." Four said when they were sitting down again.
"For what?" Zeke questioned.
"For not looking at me like some sort of kicked puppy." Four told him. "Everyone else has so far. I hate it."
Zeke just laughed at his friend and the two ate their cake.
