I saw you on the Tree of Time,
Your leaf was glory red.
Among the bows,
A browning frond
Bespoke of lofty dead.
Drawing ever closer.
One leaf the silken green of youth,
The next a crumbled black.
Disintegrate unto the floor
To join the rising stack.
A quilt lay round that tree I saw,
In colours of the world.
Faded from gloried dignity
To memories of earth.
I see you on the Tree of Time,
Your leaf is glory red.
So full of life
And in your prime,
Your colours they have said.
All but a lifetime.
Yet as the winds have e’er blown,
Sculpted dunes within its hand.
A time will come when I shall know
Black seeds sown on your land.
