An altar is a place used for worship or prayer.
First of all you do NOT have to have anything expensive or flashy.
Your altar is a part of YOUR sacred space and can look or contain anything you feel connected to.
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Earth:
Berries
Leaves
Roots
Stones
Rocks
Air:
Feathers
Flower Petals
Wings
Fire:
Ash
Soot
Burnt wood
Brick
Water:
Sea shells
Driftwood
Rain water
You do not have to have an altar. That is entirely YOUR choice.
You can make your entire room your altar, by adding something correlating to the elements in each direction. Or you can have a shelf as your altar. Or even a small pocket altar.
The choice is yours.
