When Zane surfed through the web late at night, he didn't expect to see news about an outbreak. Instead of being a regular outbreak of a common disease, it was something more sinister. It was a virus with "zombie-like" symptoms. The site he found showed a report from a scientist studying the outbreak. Zane briefly skimmed through the website and stopped when the scientist started talking about the actual disease.

"The subjects infected by this virus have been displaying symptoms that show they have loss of proper brain function. ...It seems the virus can be spread through air-borne particles... The subjects have shown increased signs of aggression.. Can be deadly if approached."

With shaky hands, he shut his laptop and engulfed himself in the darkness of the night. Since he slammed it pretty hard, Kawaii~Chan woke up from her slumber. She stretched and yawned before she looked around the room to see Zane.

"Zane, what are you doing up..?"

She adjusted to her own night vision and watched Zane sigh and crawl into bed with her.

"Nothing, Nana. Don't mind me. Just go back to sleep."

He laid next to her and hugged her close to him. She purred and leant into his chest before she murmured an "okay". Zane held her a little closer and stayed awake until he was sure she was asleep. He wouldn't let anything happen to her; not again. He would protect her no matter what.

Zane woke up with an aching back and a stabbing pain in his stomach. He pulled up his mask and checked the time on his watch. Only 8am?! His stomach groaned and woke up Nana. She chuckled and stretched, checking the back of their car to see Garroth still resting.

"Wake up, Garroth. We gotta scavenge."

She shook him and he grunted, turning around and mumbling gibberish. His blonde tail laid limp next to him as he turned around so he wasn't facing her.

"Well, I guess it's just us today."

Zane snickered at his brother's laziness and checked himself to see if he had all of his weapons with him. Nana did the same.

"Alright. Let's go."

A lot had changed since the outbreak. Millions of people, from Ru'an to Tu'la, from O'Khasis to Phoenix Drop, had been infected by the disease. When it hit Phoenix Drop, Lover's Lane was unprepared. Many news channels hadn't predicted the spread of the disease to come so quick to Phoenix Drop.

From what the panicked news anchors said the night before all power was cut from the city, they told them that everyone already had the disease. It was just a matter of whether you'd die, get bit, or survive. Dying meant you'd come back as a zombie. Getting bit meant you'd turn into a zombie while you were still alive. Surviving meant not turning at all.

The hopeful days in the neighborhood were short-lived. Zane and Nana, along with Garroth and Laurance, chose to flee Lover's Lane before it'd be impossible to get out. Aaron and Aphmau decided to stay put and Travis, Katelyn, and Dante disappeared. Zane bet that they may have been caught in the wave of infected when it first hit Phoenix Drop. Nana was distraught whenever she thought about them.
