"Sucks that we only had time to beat the beginner's dungeon," Laurance whines, plopping down on the only empty green bench in the courtyard.

First period starts in around ten minutes and, so far, neither of us have caught sight of Gene, Zenix, or Sasha. I know they'll find us soon enough since I have all their completed homework from last night.

Vylad is a miracle.

"That's your own fault for calling me at almost 8 o'clock," I tell him. "You know my mom likes to have late dinners."

"I know, but Cadenza wanted me to try on a pink dress and after one dress, she put me in another, and another, and-- You get the point..."

I snicker and Laurance shoots me a death glare which soon turns into a smile. He can never stay serious for very long.

Laurance and his sister, Cadenza, have, from what I've seen, a relatively close relationship. Cadenza loves to sew anything and everything and usually has Laurance try them on before she goes on to sell them online. I don't know why she doesn't just get one of her many friends to try them on for her, but, although he acts like he hates it, I know Laurance loves to help her out with these things.

Luckily, I don't have a sister because that sounds like a nightmare.

"There they are!" Laurance and I turn to face Gene's cold, dead stare as he and his gang draw nearer.

"My two favorites." He noogies us both painfully on the head. "Now, where's little miss sunshine, hm?"

"I-I have it all here." I scramble to grab all the sheets from inside my binder and hand them out to him. "H-Here! T-Take them!"

"Aww~ All that work to impress your little girlfriend~?" Sasha coos with a mocking smirk.

"Just take the homework and go already," Laurance mutters. He's always been the bravest of the both of us. He can actually talk back to them.

Gene's dulled, blue eyes stare directly into Laurance's. Zenix scoffs, crosses his arms, and does the same.

"I wouldn't talk to us like that if I were you." He narrows his sharp, black eyes menacingly. "We wouldn't want the whole school to know your little secret, now would we, homo?"

He basically spits out the word like it's poison in his mouth.

Laurance has gone pale, now biting his lip to make sure he doesn't say anything out of line. I can almost imagine him as a turtle, trying to hide all his limbs in his shell so he can just escape this conversation.

I know that feeling too well...

"Good. That's better." Zenix turns from Laurance. "Grab the homework, Gene. I'm tired of these freaks."

"Yeah~ I wanna find that cutesy little Aphmoo~" Sasha agrees and I suck in a breath, worried about what Sasha's planning for her.

"Alright, fine." He snatches the sheets from out of my hands. "I'll see you two losers again soon."

As he turns away, he pauses to say something over his shoulder.

"Oh, and Ro'Meave?"

Gene smirks.

"You're little brother's transferring here pretty soon, right?" My heart jumps in fear. "Congratulate him for me, will ya? And make sure you tell him I'll be looking forward to meeting him in person."

And with that, he and his posse stroll away, chuckling, as I stand completely still with fear. Now, messing with Aphmau frustrates me enough, but threatening my baby brother?! If he gets in trouble because of me, and I'm too scared to step in, he could get hurt and I wouldn't be able to do anything about it! He could go to the hospital!

"Gar?" Laurance places a gentle hand on my shoulder. "It's okay. You know Gene, he's just saying things to try and get under your skin. Vylad's a smart kid. He'll stay away. Plus, I'll bet he'd be the first kid to ever go to a teacher about them. Don't worry."

I don't reply. I'm too busy imagining horrible scenes of Vylad getting hurt by them while I just stand there, useless. Laurance sighs softly.

"Hello!"

I snap out of my thoughts to the sound of an angel's voice, and suddenly I realize it's Aphmau, and I'm so caught off guard that I stumble and fall right onto the ground. Laurance "tries" not to laugh.

"Sorry! I didn't mean to surprise you." She blushes in embarrassment and Irene she's cute.

Laurance regains control over himself: "Don't worry about him. He just gets a little jumpy in the morning. Not your fault."

She breathes a small sigh of relief before holding her hand out towards me.

"Here, let me help you up." Her smile is so warm and friendly and way too adorable for my heart to handle. It's so bright I feel a warmth, like sunlight, hitting my face. Or maybe that's just the blush from staring at her lips for so long.

My eyes dart away.

It takes all of my willpower, but I reach up and grab her soft hand, letting her pull me to my feet. What feels like a million volts of electricity shoots through my arm, almost causing me to let go because of the shock, but I don't.

It's a lot more difficult to let go of her, but I do just so she doesn't think I'm too weird.

A tingling feeling is left all throughout my arm that feels like it's fallen asleep.

"U-Uh, t-t-thanks..." I stutter out and her smile grows, showing off her glowing white and perfect teeth.

'Gorgeous' doesn't even come close to describing her...

"You're welcome! I need to do something to pay you back for what you did yesterday."

My heart jumps.

"Speaking of which, have either of you seen Gene yet?"

And, just like that, Gene's threat is back in my conscience and I feel terror all over again.

No one should go through these many emotions in one morning.

"Oh. Yeah, we did." Laurance glances over at me. "He just took the homework and left. Nothing serious."

"Okay. I was worried you two were in trouble or something."

He looks back at her.

"Nope. We're safe."

I sigh.

If only Vylad was...

I don't like growing up.
